Gradual Retreat Method - how do you handle night wakes?

We have started the gradual retreat training method with our 18 month old. I moved from feeding to sleep to cuddling to sleep and we are now going to try putting her in her cot awake and sitting next to her (which I know won’t go down well).

My question is what do you do if they wake up during the night? Sometimes she wakes up quite upset and needs comfort.

weve always given comfort for night wakes (feed, cuddle, cosleep in her floor bed). She falls asleep independently with one of us sitting next to her bed. Personally I can’t see the point in staying awake ages; just get them back to sleep ASAP. Falling asleep independently at bedtime should help with longer stretches-in theory!
