Establishing a clear bedtime routine EG. Bath and books.

Using things to aid self soothing, namely a dummy, white noise and a comforter.

Lastly we did use Ferber, but remember you don't have to follow the timings recommended religiously. We started off with the 2 min intervals and stuck with those for about a week. Then we moved to 5 mins, and that seemed to be training largely complete after about 2-3 weeks. Baby is very happy, goes to sleep without any separation anxiety at all, and sleeps through the night. If he does wake up distressed, it's normally just dummy back in and a bit of a back or belly rub for a minute, then straight back asleep.
