What do you consider small gap between kids

Just interested to know what you have experienced amongst your peers as an average gap between kid1 and kid2 and subsequent. I have a 2.7 yr gap which I thought was pretty small but am seeing more and more smaller gaps - maybe die to people waiting longer to have kids and therefore not able to wait long before the next.

A year or less. Mine are 2 years apart (almost exactly) and that feels pretty average.

GRCP · 18/01/2026 16:19

I was able to wait longer, just didn’t want to.

Purlant · 18/01/2026 16:20

3-4yrs is about average here. Most people had their first late 30s. It’s the double nursery bills that put a lot of people off having them too close together (and the double uni bills later!).

Well, anything under 2 years really. Any gap where the older one doesn't remember the younger one never being there IYSWIM.

Mine have about a year and a half between them, and my older one doesn't remember the younger one not being around. They both only remember a life with each other. 😃

Several friends have 2.5 to 3.5 year age gaps between 2 kids, and tbh that is fairly small too. Smile

OhDear111 · 18/01/2026 16:22

Small gap is under 18 months. Medium gap 18 months to 3 years. Bigger gap over 4 years - is dc at school.

ClareVoiance · 18/01/2026 16:28

I know a family who at one point had 3 children under 2 years old (not twins or triplets). DC1 was nearly 2, DC2 was nearly 14 months and DC3 was a newborn baby.

Usual gap is about 2.5 - 3 years IME.

Anything under 2 years is a small age gap I think. I've got a 22 month gap between 1 and 2 and 12 months between 4 and 5. The older 2 age gap was an absolute nightmare when they were little but lovely now they are older. The younger 2 were great when babies although they do everything together so it was hard for my youngest when his brother started school and then when he started secondary school.

remotecontrolcrane · 18/01/2026 18:24

Anything under two years I think x

PurpleLovecats · 18/01/2026 18:26

Under a year I think. I have 15 months between my first two and it didn’t seem that small a gap.

DizziLizzy · 18/01/2026 18:28

Mine are 15 months apart. I don't know anyone else that has had there's closer. Obviously you do get the odd siblings born within a year of each other and its not unheard of them being in the same school year. Mine are in consecutive school year. Tje gap worked out perfectly for us bit whatever gap you have would work just fine.

Sandcaaarstle · 18/01/2026 18:32

Mine are 21 months apart which I think is average around here. All DC’s friends with siblings had a school year between them. My ex had four years between his which I always thought was a huge age gap! Three years between my brother and me and we weren’t close growing up, part of the reason I wanted
mine closer together.

Grapeandcracker · 18/01/2026 18:38

Most gaps are 3-4 years around here. Two years and under viewed as a small gap. Most commonly due to having first dc late, unplanned pg or career not being forgiving of a longer gap. Larger gaps are seen as a bit of a luxury if planned as it would mean the parent doesn't need to worry about career planning around baby gaps.

Yes I’d agree with this

Iheartguacamole · 18/01/2026 18:43

I’ve got an 18month age gap between my 2 and if I hear of anyone having less than that I do a sharp intake of breath through my teeth

SuperGinger · 18/01/2026 18:45

Less than a year is madness, less than 18 months is a small gap. Mine are 15 months apart and it was intense

laserme · 18/01/2026 19:49

4 years between eldest and child 2

60 seconds between child 2 and 3 😂

my kids school is quite unusual but it’s the norm to have 12 to 18 months between siblings and they usually have 3-4 children

Mine are 16mo apart and this made me laugh 😂

I actually love the age gap, but it was mental at first!

PositiveAttitude · 18/01/2026 20:39

15 months between 1 and 2
18 months between 2 and 3
21 months between 3 and 4
15 months between 4 and 5.

Less than 6 years between eldest and youngest.
🙄😁

FuzzyWolf · 18/01/2026 20:46

I think under a year is a small gap.

All of mine have just over a year between them.

TheBewleySisters · 18/01/2026 20:48

My nephew and niece are 11 months apart.

Tammygirl12 · 18/01/2026 20:51

Have a 3 year gap and thinks that’s medium. And then have a 20 month gap and felt that was quite a small gap in comparison!!
