Hit face on sink A&E or wait until tomorrow, or nothing?

My 3 year old has just tripped and hit their face on the side of the sink. It’s their cheekbone under eye/ side of face area. It made a horrible loud noise. Big initial scream, I’ve put some wrapped frozen peas on go about 5 minutes as that’s all they would tolerate. Stopped crying after 10 mins, face is really red and slightly swollen but back to happy child.

We were going to bed but now using that as an excuse to stay up! Do you think that warrants being ok and can get checked tomorrow or not at all.

I don’t think you need a&e unless they show signs of concussion (vomiting, dizzyness, confusion)

You probably don’t even need to go tomorrow unless their face is extremely swollen or looks like there’s been serious damage

If they’re in pain with it tomorrow then I’d get it checked but I’d imagine that if it was anything serious like a fractured cheekbone that it would be extremely painful and they wouldn’t be back to normal after ten mins. I think they’d also be unable to lie on that side of their face without being in a lot of pain.

I don’t think that needs A&E unless they passed out, vomited, had a seizure, can’t see properly or have blood shot eyes. If they are behaving in their usual way and aren’t drowsy they are more than likely fine. A&E won’t x-ray for this, just observe. It’s unlikely to be fractured but obviously do get it checked if the swelling/bruising doesn’t go in a few days. Calpol for pain as required.

Thank you! I think they’ll be fine too hopefully. Once they hit their front teeth on something at the playground and there was bleeding from lip and again big cry but then fine after 10 mins.
I noticed two days later their front teeth had moved back and went to the dentist the next week and got told off for not going sooner.

I just feel paranoid about timeframe now!

thank you so much I will see how they get on tomorrow x

I agree with everyone else. There is no need for A&E for a bump, unless that bump is accompanied by symptoms of concussion or serious injury.

Coffeislife · 09/01/2026 21:16

If you can let them sleep ' watch ' for any uneven sweeling. Or any above symptoms

Call 111 to settle your nerves. I agree with PPs you’ll likely be told to monitor for the next 24h for signs like vomiting etc as it’s a head injury technically

IceIceSlippyIce · 09/01/2026 21:26

Id let them go to bed, but rouse them every hour or so until you go to bed.
By rouse, I mean move an arm slightly, and check they snuggle back down - ie they arent unconscious, not wake them up and ask them what day it is!

Edit: A&E if vomiting or unrousable.
