NFER test low scores - what to do?

My son is in year 2 and did his autumn NFER tests just before Christmas. His maths is scored at 100 which is bang on average but his reading is scored at 80 which is quite a lot lower than average.

Clearly he needs a bit of help with his reading and I’m going to chat to the teacher but wanted also to get your thoughts and experiences.

His phonics is ok - he’s progressing through the groups well and is on track from that point of view. Equally his comprehension is ok if you read him the text and questions - he will get the answers right.

where he seems to be struggling is reading and comprehending at the same time - he’s just reading the words without actually taking them in it seems.

Any advice? Resources?

Thank you!
