Reflux?

My DD is 4 weeks old today. I am breast feeding and am pleased to say it has gone well since day one. She re gained her birth weight after 10 days and has put 2.4lb on since she was born. The HV is happy with her.

However, I think she is in pain a reasonable amount of time . I have no idea of any of these things are related but I have read some info about reflux and wonder whether that is what is affecting my dd.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

  • I feed her on demand & she usually eats every 2-3 hours for 20 minutes
  • she seems to eat quickly and gulps a lot
  • sometimes she almost chokes on mouthfuls of milk
  • she wants to suck all the time (fingers, dummy etc). A dummy helped but now she is sucking it very liudly and obssessively even when she has just fed and is whimpering constantly when she has the dummy in
  • she has started over the past 2 or 3 days to have a little bit of sick - but like cream (i.e thicker than milk) come out after a feed - usually about 10-15 minutes later
  • she has hiccups a lot
  • we tried Infacol and it may've helped but have been giving it to her less on advice of mw
  • I drink one cup of proper coffee every day (sometimes two but I am trying!)
  • I have had a few glasses of wine or beer on different days (1 now and then - not a few on one day) but this doesn't seem to affect her

Any suggestions much appreciated.

MM

I wonder if it's wind monkeysmama? It sounds as though you have a plentiful supply and it may be a bit hard for her to manage atm, hence the almost choking, hiccups etc. The sick sounds normal to me.

DS3 had mild reflux and he was in real discomfort for some time after a feed, and during feeds sometimes too.

In my experience with all 3 of mine occasional coffee and wine made no difference at all.

Thanks Miss Haversham. She is a windy baby so it makes sense. I am new to this and didn't realise wind could be so bad!

DS1 was like that, especially the frantic dummy sucking. He settled down quickly though, at about 5 weeks I think.

Hopefully someone else will be along now with more ideas. Good Luck!

Sounds like you have a fast let-down of milk, usually sounds like they are gulping down the milk, sometimes make clicking noises to slow the milk down etc.

I would post on breast and bottle feeding - and have a read of those posts (I posted for my friend who has a very fast let down)

Both my sons had reflux, one mild and one quite badly. I also had a fast let-down of milk but no-one to help me (the best advice I was given by a midwife was "gosh if you were bottle feeding I would advise you to change to a slower teat!!!")

The sicking up 10-15 mins after a feed sounds like reflux, it is thicker because they have had it curdling in their tummies, also the hiccups.

The fast gulping of milk makes them windy and can cause discomfort.

Best of luck, but try the breast & bottle feeding message board for info on fast letdown.
