Calpol 7 week baby

Hi. My baby is 7 weeks old, above average in weight weighing 12.10 oz. He is poorly with a stinking cold, blocked up, irritable, coughing a lot. I know they say 2 months for calpol and not giving it to them because of the whole temperature thing, but his temp has been fine, he is just so uncomfortable and it’s awful I can’t do anything for him! Would it be ok to give him calpol? He isn’t far off his vaccines now where he is allowed anyway. (I have asked medical advice) but they only advised against it I think because it can hide a temperature …

Thanks in advance :)

It's so hard when they are tiny and unwell! Calpol is not going to do much for congestion and a cough, I'm afraid, even if he were old enough to haven't (which he isn't). Even between months 2-3, I think you're supposed to give in after the jabs only – pretty sure it's at least 3 months for other use.

I would try saline spray for his nose and children's olbas oil on a tissue nearby. Running a hot shower so the bathroom gets steamy and taking him in to breathe the warm, steamy air can also help.

I have a 14 week old with a stinking cold too and we have given him a couple of doses on Calpol and ibuprofen over the last week when he has been distraught and honestly it's made no difference. He's probably a similar weight.. 5.5kg last week.

Getting him to sleep and feed has been the best medicine. We have been using the saline nose thing and having a bit of olbas in a humidifier. Patiently rocking or walking him to sleep and then getting him to feed once he's had a bit of a sleep and calmed down.
