Pauses in breathing while asleep

I’ didn’t know this wasn’t normal as I was always told when she was a newborn and brought this up that it’s normal
but now she’s 19 months nearly and still doing it I googled it and apparently it’s not normal anymore at my baby’s age!
basically my baby will be asleep and she’ll breath fast or do like a sigh almost and then her breathing will pause for 5/8 seconds then go back to normal.
I didn’t realise this isn’t normal in her age so I’m really freaking out
I can’t see the doctor for this for over a week
I feel like I can’t sleep now as I have to watch her I feel sick and worried with googling about it

has anyone else experienced this ? What was the outcome/ diagnosis as it seems there’s always a cause for it

Try and get some videos of it happening then you can show them to the GP and say you are concerned this is sleep apnoea and can they refer you to ENT. ENT can organise a sleep study where they can check oxygen saturation through the night to see if that's what it is and make a plan.

My ds had this. I videoed it for ent. Saw ent and she organised his adeniods and tonsils to be removed. He also got grommets due to glue ear.
A year ago today actually he was 23 months.
Sadly some other issue has cropped up and hes now back to the stopping breathing waiting again for more ent appointments

Thank you for sharing, I’m just so scared to sleep at the moment I feel like I have to constantly watch her breathing and wow. I feel like that’s so much trauma for a little baby :( I’m so nervous she does often have waxy ears wonder if it’s all linked ! :(

Have you any concerns for her hearing? I had the same when little and had to have it all out. Make sure you video it. Does she snore? Ds snores like a fully grown man bless him.

JustPlumPombear · 12/12/2025 02:24

No she doesn’t snore, she does have her mouth open tho when she has a dummy out , I’ve recorded it tonight as I’m so worried sick and she pauses breathing for 10 seconds and she’s done it about 7 times the past hour!
how can I sleep when this is going on I’m feeling scared to sleep even seeing the pauses in breath happen scare me when I don’t see her chest rise and fall
and I don’t think so but her ears are quite waxy also something I’ll bring up
I have to wait till next Friday to even see a doctor I feel so worried

OP get yourself an owlet smart sock while you wait for medical investigations. Pricey but saved my sanity.

Dairymilkisminging · 12/12/2025 03:48

Bless you. Is there anyway you can be seen earlier? How is her sleep quality? We found that ds would sleep for 14 hours overnight and still need a 4/5 hour nap in the day so sleeping loads.

JustPlumPombear · 13/12/2025 23:41

She sleeps pretty good rang gp Friday , gp wouldn’t see me till Monday so I rang 111 they said they’ll get my gp to call , they never called within the 6 hours stated wait then I rang my gp they said we saw the referral and the gp decided you can wait till Monday! No one bothered to even let me know! Basically doctor thought f me she can wait, the receptionist was rude and said basically there’s nothing more they can do as they have her an appointment! although I was saying how worried I was about her
I was very upset so I went to call 111 waited again for someone to call then was told there’s nothing anyone could do on the phone and to go to a&e waited there 3/4 hours to be told it’s nothing and it sounded within “physiological norms” they checked her over and checked her throat etc so I’m still left worried! I think I’ll look into paying for a private sleep study at this point
I showed them the video and the Doctor wasn’t worried
she isn’t a loud sleeper or anything she just seems to do a deep breath in her sleep then pauses for 10 seconds…
Idk if I should be really worried or calm down a bit I’m still struggling to sleep because of this !

I looked at owlets, but I seen a lot of people says they went off falsely and worry it would really trigger my anxiety even more
