Baby sleep query!

CandidFox · 02/11/2025 20:43

My little one is approaching 10 weeks old. We have purchased the padded sleep suits (2.5 tog) as he likes to wriggle and doesn’t get on well with sleeping bags.

my question is, is it safe to put a short sleeved vest, normal sleep suit then his togged sleep suit on during the colder nights?

the reason I ask , is I’m thinking the togged sleep suit would be warmer than the sleeping bag as this has arms. Worried about overheating!

thanks in advance for any advice!

There are charts online which show you what babies should wear depending on the room temp.

Hey @Anditstartedagain , thank you, I have looked at these but I am confused because they apply to sleeping bags with togs, not sleeping suits. I’m worried the sleep suit will be warmer than a sleeping bag as the sleeping bag doesn’t have arms, this one does x

Just ensure his room isn't too warm. 16-18 degrees.

Or ditch the long sleeved sleepsuit

A baby that's too cold will wake up and let you know. A baby that's too hot won't. It's best to underdress if anything and then add a layer if they're too cold.

The exact right number of layers will depend on how warm the room is. At the moment I'd say sleepsuit and snuggle suit, but no vest. Or long sleeve vest, but no sleepsuit and padded snugglesuit. But that's based on the temperature where I am.

Depends how warm the room is. At the moment I’d probs go for a short sleeved vest and the long sleeved tog bag. My baby runs hot so we never had any more layers than the short sleeved one under his sleep bag. He was always comfortably warm. They’ll let you know if they’re cold.

I really worry about overheating. We have a 2.5 tot sleep bag and use just a baby grow under but no vest to be sure. I add a vest in the day as taking baby out etc!

I think it’s the tog that counts not whether or not it’s a bag or a suit. It depends on how warm the room is but I always air on the side of caution as my daughter was a summer baby. Not the nicest of quotes but my HV told me that cold babies cry and hot babies die which has stuck with me.

Our house never gets below 17.5 degrees even at the very depths of winter and my babies have never worn a vest, only a long sleeved sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I agree that the sleeves make a difference, so would remove the vest. If they're cold they'll let you know.
