Hi all,

Just looking to see if anyone had any similar situations or any advice? I have a 5 year old, and an 18 month old. Since the baby was born, elder sister has always been very active around her but its getting worse lately and the toddler is starting to get upset when she sees her, or she approaches to play. Oldest will engage with the toddler but its never gently - she isnt doing it with malice, but shes so rough with the toddler which then turns into tears. Weve tried talking to 5yo about being kind, slow her down a little, read books etc but she is forever picking her up and dragging her round, trying to play rough with her, she starts well like tickling but it quickly turns into her being very heavy handed. The toddler lately has started to refuse to play with her older sister, cries if she comes close to her, won't sit next to her or give her a cuddle and its getting the oldest upset. Ive tried reasoning with her, showing her how to play nicely and gently, but im worried their bond won't get any better if this carries out. I have tried reward charts, modelling being gentle in play etc but nothing just seems to stick. Anyone any advice?!

You get a lot firmer. "Look at her face? Does sister like this? No. She doesn't. You stop and move away". Constant supervision, and physical intervention the second your five year old oversteps. Don't wait for your toddler to get upset.
