Rude staff at restaurant

Did we over-react? I was at a restaurant in London Bridge (F&G) with my 3 nieces and nephews. Everything was great, the little one (2 years old), between courses, got up and wanted to see what was going on at the bar, which was right next to our table. There were empty stools and she started climbing them, without disturbing anyone. She happened to touch one of the plates that was laid out for future patrons. At that point, a staff member became irate, telling us to sit down and that now she'd have to change the plate because the baby had touched it. I was very shocked. All three children had behaved impeccably and were very polite. The baby wasn't running amok and was not disturbing anyone. We paid for what we ate and left. Am I being unreasonable?

COMPLETELY unreasonable. The parent of the feral two year old should have intervened. A restaurant is not a playground for a toddler, the parents are totally at fault here for not actually parenting.

ThriveAT · 25/10/2025 15:55

Yes, the staff can't keep changing plates that the toddler has touched. Be considerate. The kid could have broken something.

yes

I think you might have made a typo in your OP. Did you mean to write "Rude customer in restaurant?"

What's F&G?

Yes.
Control your 2 year old and save climbing for soft play or the park. Would you eat off a plate someone else had had their fingers all over.

MyDeftDuck · 25/10/2025 16:04

Yes, you are! How is it acceptable for anyone to touch a plate that someone is going to eat off regardless of how young cute and well behaved they’re thought to be? Even well behaved children have dirty hands.

daydreamingnightowl · 25/10/2025 16:08

You've all inspired me to change our plans and take my 2 year old out for dinner tonight. Hope to see some of you there. Don't worry you'll hear us before you see us.

ScholesPanda · 25/10/2025 16:13

YABU. I'd hate to see what happens when these children aren't behaving 'impeccably'.

snowwhiteisfeelinggrumpy · 25/10/2025 16:15

Yes.

housethatbuiltme · 25/10/2025 16:23

In the old days if someone had to intervene because you weren't parenting people would be mortified, they would not try and blame everyone else by admitting they weren't controlling their children... I often wonder if these are all reverses but with people entitlement now worryingly probably not.

You and your group allowed your parties child to do something not only fairly stupid and dangerous (why are you letting them climb anything, its not a soft play) to anyone with common sense but that is also in violation of food safety standards (and probably liquor licensing too) and as a result cost the restaurant wasted money and could have gotten them in real trouble... of course you are being unreasonable.

Yes totally. You were not in control of your child and made extra work for staff.

You were 💯 % U

Londonmummy66 · 25/10/2025 16:39

YABVVU for so many reasons. First why the hell go to that restaurant and not one like the two Pizza Expresses round the corner in either direction where they would have given the DC their own colouring sheets and crayons and had a high chair to contain the 2 year old? If you had to go to a nicer restaurant then when there was a break between courses you should have taken the children outside for a few minutes to stretch their legs and look at the Golden Hinde and then brought them back to sit at the table again. Thirdly allowing a 2 year old to climb onto a bar stool is pretty negligent parenting - what if it had toppled over and they'd fallen off. Fourthly how disgusting that you consider its OK for a child to stick their fingers into someone else's food. We have such a thing as food hygiene rules for a reason and the restaurant is required to comply with it so they couldn't then serve that plate to a customer as it would be "contaminated". I suggest you stick to soft play until the children are all capable of behaving themselves at a meal in public.

Bet anything the children would have preferred a take away hot dog/chips and a chance to chase the pigeons in the churchyard or outside the Globe rather than a sit down meal ib what is basically a pub with an Italian menu.

Stillgroupie · 25/10/2025 16:43

You were a pain in the arse Op. Yes, should have been extremely apologetic for letting your kid roam around at will.
'We paid for what we ate and left.' - isn't that what people usually do in a restaurant? Did you huff and puff and demand to pay immediately while making loud comments about how beautifully behaved your children had been?

Icecreamandcoffee · 25/10/2025 16:46

Yes. At least one of the children were not well behaved at all. Getting up from the table, climbing up the stool, touching plates. The climbing is a safety hazard, a stool can easily topple over and into a child. Children should not be climbing up bar stools it's not cute. Touching plates is also a health hazard. Toddlers are notorious for hands in everything -mouths, mud, on the floor. Toddlers need supervision in order to make sure they are not touching things other guests outside your family will use.

Of course staff will say something. It sounds like at least one child was not been supervised appropriately.

Thank you. I goggled "F&G restaurant London Bridge" which didn't help.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/10/2025 17:10

The staff weren’t rude. They were telling you that the 2-year old shouldn’t have been allowed to climb onto a stool or touch plates laid out for other people. Things that you should know and should have controlled. You were the rude ones for allowing a child to play in a restaurant.

Skybluepinky · 25/10/2025 17:36

Yes of course, you weren’t in control of your children and are still unaware that their behaviour was unacceptable!

It used to be an amazing restaurant called Antico but that closed. F&G is OK but the staff can be rude but tbh in this case it was called for....
