Rude staff at restaurant

Did we over-react? I was at a restaurant in London Bridge (F&G) with my 3 nieces and nephews. Everything was great, the little one (2 years old), between courses, got up and wanted to see what was going on at the bar, which was right next to our table. There were empty stools and she started climbing them, without disturbing anyone. She happened to touch one of the plates that was laid out for future patrons. At that point, a staff member became irate, telling us to sit down and that now she'd have to change the plate because the baby had touched it. I was very shocked. All three children had behaved impeccably and were very polite. The baby wasn't running amok and was not disturbing anyone. We paid for what we ate and left. Am I being unreasonable?

Moat 2 year olds manage fine if talked to and entertained at the table - colouring, books, stickers etc. I have nothing against children in restaurants, but parents are required to do parenting rather than let their children wander about.

If a child needs to move between courses then take them for a wander somewhere safe outside. A restaurant isn’t a play ground.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 25/10/2025 12:47

Goady thread as it’s so obvious that the children were not impeccably behaved

Yes you are being unreasonable. Utterly so.

TakeResponsibilty · 25/10/2025 12:50

@ProudAuntieof3 The restaurant staff were not rude. The parents/guardians of the two year old were rude(not to mention unconcerned for the safety of the toddler, staff and other patrons) .

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/10/2025 12:50

Lol this is soo a wind up thread

Vitriolinsanity · 25/10/2025 12:50

@daydreamingnightowlpubs and restaurants are literally designed for large groups of adults. They are not designed for free-play children.

daydreamingnightowl · 25/10/2025 12:52

I don't understand what's going on. A 2 year old climbed on a stool and touched a plate at a restaurant. I have seen a lot worse behaviour from adults in a restaurant than that.

I will wear my confused face for the rest of the day in tribute to this thread.

TidyDancer · 25/10/2025 12:53

This has more than a whiff of reverse about it or posted only to be goady.

Livpool · 25/10/2025 12:53

YABU - and impeccably behaved children don’t climb on stools or touch plates. What if the plate had been hot? You would have complained I am sure

HoppingPavlova · 25/10/2025 12:53

Yep, YABVU. You don’t let kids go up to bar areas or anywhere other than your table. You don’t allow them to touch clean tables, plates, cutlery. Do you want to eat off a plate a 2yo’s grubby fingers had touched, yuk, so have a bit of respect for others. And, yes, I’ve had kids. Didn’t allow carry on like this to occur.

TwinklyStork · 25/10/2025 12:53

Oh my god, learn to parent your child. Of course you’re BU.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 25/10/2025 12:54

Sorry YABU. Kids shouldn't be anywhere near the bar, for any reason. If the plate fell and smashed the child could've been injured. If you're out for a meal, the children stay at the table with their adult.

wizzler · 25/10/2025 12:57

YABVU

JDM625 · 25/10/2025 13:00

If the 2yr old had tipped the stool back and cracked their skull on the floor, would you have blamed the staff also???
YABVU.

Cherrytree86 · 25/10/2025 13:04

YANBU, Op. a customer should be happy to eat off a plate your child had touched, they should count themselves lucky

Madformaltesers · 25/10/2025 13:05

Really? Yes

orangina01 · 25/10/2025 13:08

Yabu. End of.

You should not let a toddler wander round sticking their fingers into other folks food. That's pretty shocking. You should have been made today for the food she spoiled.

Yanbu

How can a 2 year old sit for the full course of a restaurant visit? It's not fair to say they should never go.

I find people who talk loudly about their themselves annoying at restaurants. Should they not be allowed either?

I also find big groups of adults annoying in restaurants. Can we ban them too?

Some people don't mind children in restaurants, some do but I don't think it's unreasonable that a 2 year old was exploring the immediate area between courses. And totally unprofessional for staff to react like that.

Is it a wind up that so many think op has been unreasonable?

You think it’s good parenting to let a 2 year old climb on a stool and touch someone else’s plate? Are you OPs friend posting in support? If not, then you are also that parent.

I don’t want someone else’s slobbery child’s hands on the plate I’m about to eat from, children are not the most hygienic, they stick fingers in noses, mouths and touch all sorts of things.

If a child can’t sit at a table then the parent should get up and be with them, entertaining them, so they don’t bother other diners, not carry on sitting at their table letting their toddler bother staff and other diners.

Colour, play snap, have small toys, picture books, even a tablet with headphones. Never wandering about. Staff have drinks and hot food, nobody should be having to navigate a toddler.

MumChp · 25/10/2025 13:20

Yes. You are unreasonable.
It's not a nursery.
