There's got to be something wrong with my 8 week old

As the title states im really starting to think theres somwthing wrong with my 8 week old baby. He's not my first child but certainly the most difficult, and my first born had colic. He never stops crying! He only sleeps for about 1 hour at a time and wakes for 2-4hours sometimes longer, he's like this all day and night so im exhausted and obviously sleep deprived. I have spoken to my HV about the issues a few weeks ago and she suggested it could be reflux, so I tried all the methods and suggestions, and all it achieved was adding constipation into the mix. He does bring up his feeds sometimes through out the day, he tummy sometimes sounds gurgley, he constantly has wind regardless of how much I wind him, hes always unsettled and crying even when hes in the pram or car and especially within the hour after having a bottle. He has 2ounces every 2 hours.
None of this is new for him, he's pretty much been like it since birth. Has anyone else experienced this? Was there something wrong, or is this just my life now?
I have already taken him to the Dr's when he was 5 weeks old and he just fobbed me off n suggested I'm just exhausted and would benefit from a break from him 😒 I have another appointment booked at the end of the week

I have a feeling im going to have to be quite firm with the GP too, I refuse to be fobbed off again, I definitely want to leave with a prescription for change of milk

I really hope you do get the milk change OP. It's so so hard, I was firm and ready and my GP thankful said I knew my baby better than anyone and he was my 3rd allergy baby so I knew what I was talking about. Prescription signed and handed over in minutes and I hope you have the same experience! X

4th baby over here and 4/4 for reflux and CMPA. The 4th being the worst and most unsettled with horrible dark green poo and absolutely awful eggy farts constantly despite our burping technique being very effective. The others were fine on Aptamil Pepti 1 but he needed to be switched to Nutramigen.

Just keep in mind that infant Gaviscon is basically just a thickener. Liquid omeprazole works much better. And CMPA is different from lactose intolerance just because people often think it's the same thing.

Be firm and don't let them fob you off.

Another one that had a baby like this due to reflux and food allergies.

We were fobbed off by the GP until 17 weeks when we saw a paediatrician for something else and got on the right track. It turned out my daughter has mild/moderate reflux, severe silent reflux and 20 food allergies. The GP was treating the moderate reflux with low dose omperazole and incorrectly told me I couldn't use gaviscon with it but missed that she also had silent reflux which was much worse than her physical reflux and told me she would be very poorly if reacting to my breastmilk - true for lactose intolerance not true for cmpa.
Knowledge of GPs is varied depending on their experience. If you don't make progress with one gp try a different one. I wish we hadn't kept seeing the same GP repeatedly.

I think the confusion with Gaviscon is that in adults and older children 2 acid reducing type medications can't be used together. However, infant Gaviscon is just a thickener and a doctor should absolutely have known that. And that lactose intolerance in babies is actually quite rare. It can be very tiring can't it. We use something called Carobel which is actually quite old fashioned from what I hear but we get it prescribed and it's essentially the same thing as the infant Gaviscon but we find it works better along with the omeprazole too.

Carobel !!! Omg. Blast from the past.

Aka wallpaper paste 🤣

BilbaoBaggage · 30/09/2025 20:22

Read the OP and immediately said CMPA. My first was like that, nearly didn't have another because it was so horrendous. A long time ago now, but we were advised to put the head end of his crib on a couple of fat books, which helped. We never got prescribed gaviscon, but me being dairy free while BF and then prescription formula worked.

It's funny stuff. One scoop is fine and doesn't change the consistency of a 7oz bottle too much. But half a scoop over that and you can use it to fill the cracks in the walls.

Also good for thickening runny baby food and porridge etc as well btw for anyone reading this 😂

Different vote. My child was like this. She was autistic. Wonderfully autistic. Drives a car, has a job, heading to university, and life is great autistic, but that first year was brutal.

Bunnybear42 · 30/09/2025 20:26

Another vote for CMPA !! Same symptoms as mine but she also had constant bowel movements up to 14 a day … told it was normal by HV 🙄🙄 turned out she has multiple allergies

Are you breastfeeding? If so try cutting dairy from your diet.
If bottle feeding try a formula with no cows milk protein
I hope you find a solution and he settles soon

This!!
Could have written this about my now 6 year old. Cut the dairy and see what happens

MushroomQueen · 30/09/2025 21:17

I had this with my middle one- started at 6 weeks and cried and cried all day and night / ended up giving lactase drops (was end) but had to go onto lactose free formula supplementary at3m and then completely stopped at 5m as was going insane. At 6m he changed overnight and was like a different baby - his gut matured and he could eat all things no issue. He’s 9 now and no issues but I have blacked out a lot of his 6m as was awful, I would suggest asking about cmpa and lactose issues / mine had terrible liquid poo he couldn’t get out / just from bm. I wish I had pushed more from drs. I give you a virtual hug I remember how awful I felt.

Scandidandi · 30/09/2025 22:10

Check with the midwife he hasn’t got a tongue tie and

B0D · 30/09/2025 22:24

What is CMPA ? I’m guessing cows milk protein allergy ?

my child had terrible colic and I breast fed for six months. Then I started on formula he showed up with an immediate rash and GP said he’s allergic to cows milk. and prescribed soya formula ( long time ago )

reading this thread has brought it all back! It was My first baby and I was a very single parent. nobody recommended cutting out dairy, if only maybe we could have had a more pleasant first few months .

seven201 · 30/09/2025 22:44

My first child was like this. Didn’t sleep much at all and when awake did a lot of screaming. Mine would only sleep when vertical. Nearly broke me. Was fobbed off by the GP many times (“have you tried showing her toys?”). She had silent reflux (had ranitidine and omeperazole and outgrew at 2years but wasn’t properly treated until 9 months as GPs kept fobbing me off) and CMPA (outgrew at 3). I combi fed so I gave up milk products and she had prescription nutramigen formula.

She didn’t sleep in a stretch longer than a couple of hours until she was 9 months because of the GPs. She was in unnecessary pain for MONTHS. I am still furious at myself for not being more forceful and letting them send me away. Don’t let that happen to you.

We tried carobel but my daughter is allergic to carob too!

Yes I think they generally didn't have a great background in paediatric reflux. The paediatrician was quite disparaging about what we had been told by them. They repeatedly told me that reflux was just a washing problem and didn't really need treatment. Baby is now a 5 yo and it's only in the last year that her reflux has stabilised and finally in the last 4 months we have been able to slowly reduce the 3 reflux meds she's has needed to manage her reflux.

Film the crying to show the GP at your appointment, in case they do they annoying thing of being absolutely fine at the appointment. My first was like this and had silent reflux. We spent a lot of our early months in hospital. The type of cry was what the consultant used to diagnose and then he ruled out other things.

Didn't think of this! Will absolutely do it, he's some how even worse today so will definitely want the dr to see this x

Thats so interesting, I had no idea these symptoms linked to autism! 🩷 will keep an eye out for more 'typical characteristics' x

Is the milk prescription only - is it not something you could just buy and try out ?

WhimsicalCupcake · 05/10/2025 11:05

Update:

I went to the GP Friday who agreed that it was probably either reflux or CMPA and DS would probably benefit from prescription milk or/and anti reflux meds but only if i take him back in 4 weeks and hes still struggling 🤔🤦‍♀️ I argued with him back and forth for a while about this decision because I dont understand why he wants DS to suffer another 4 weeks when he could just help him now. but in the end I decided to accept thats hes not going to budge, so I have made another appointment for next week with a different GP. Wish me luck 😩🤞

PumpkinSpicedLatte · 05/10/2025 19:32

Keep pushing OP. You can buy the CMPA formula online, I’d do that until you see the other GP. Don’t let them believe your son has to suffer

Tess45 · 05/10/2025 19:41

My current little one at that age (youngest of 6) would feed ok at nighttime’s but struggled with feeds in the day. Was happy during the day it carried in carrier all day, bath and bedtime in quiet dark room by 7pm on the dot and co sleeping with 1-2 hourly feeds during night, then she was fine, much easier from 3 months

TeenLifeMum · 05/10/2025 19:45

dd1 was like this. It was reflux and at 17 weeks we introduced solids (advised by a paediatric consultant). She’s 17 now and was a very amenable toddler and easy, chilled teen.
