Baby grunting?!

Hello,

my 3 week old has started grunting in her sleep. She’s definitley asleep as she cries when she wants a bottle. Is this normal! The grunting has come out of nowhere and is throughout the whole night. I’ve picked her up to offer a feed and she only takes like 0.5 ounce and then falls back asleep.

Any concerns with a very small baby, ask a doctor or midwife.

I would guess it is probably just her digestion? Babies have to put in an awful lot of effort to get milk moving through their system, it seems!
As @Timeforabitofpeace says, do speak to your HV if you are concerned.

I'm sure this is pretty normal for some babies. As PP said it is probably because of digestion of the milk. I'm pretty sure I've read a lot of threads on here discussing babies grunting all night😊

Both of mine did this throughout the night as newborns and it was loud. I assumed digestion too.

I have a 2 week old and he is so bloody noisy when asleep. He's quiet if he's being held so it's a trade off between me not sleeping due this noise or because I'm holding him

Normal! Small babies can be so noisy when sleeping!

If you want reassurance then do chat to the HV because it’s what they’re saying there for (record it maybe to show her?) but otherwise just let her be. Never disturb a sleeping baby! Overnight I would only respond to actual crying or a poo nappy.

I think it’s normal - my dd1 grunted a lot although she did get really bad colic and reflux so maybe part of it was digestive issues
