Hi

What do you dress newborn children in (1m old) when doing the school run/outings for this season now?

For the morning school run (walk rather than car) I used to wake dd, feed her fr as long as possible and then out her in the pram in the baby grow that she'd worn to bed, plus a blanket. Coat/pram suutiy when slightly colder. I'd then dress her in 'day clothes' once we got in.

I did similar to @KnickerlessFlannel.

I put them in a winter weight sleeping bag because the bassinet was a bit drafty

I need to drive the school is too far

I got an app called “BabyWeather” which uses your location to suggest layers for the baby, considering the current temperature. Very useful for us as me and DH respond entirely differently to weather so “1 more layer” makes 0 sense to either of us!

Caspianberg · 21/09/2025 09:12

I would dress them in baby short sleeve vets and baby grow.
Then add layers as needed. In house and if you go into stores it can be warm still.

Probably thicker knit cardigan, and hat and maybe some knit bootie socks over baby grow feet for in car seat. Tuck blanket over baby in car seat if cold. Keep spare extra blanket in car if you need to add another one when outside on school run

Do you put them in a pram or anything from the car to school? I wouldn’t over dress in the car because I’d always have the heaters on anyway. Just a vest, baby grow, cardigan and blanket to put round them to get to the car if it’s really cold. Then I’d put a pram suit on when get out the car and blankets

djddmdm · 21/09/2025 11:34

What about if the cardigan is the same thickness as the pram suit? Wouldnt it be easier just to put pram suit over it?

Either buggy or sling from the car to the school

i wouldn’t use a pram suit at all for a 1 month old in England in September. They will just overheat in car and shops and they aren’t running away so you can layer with blankets easier.

I don’t thing I used pram suit at all Ds first winter and we live in a cold snowy location. He was too hot in sling in that, on freezing days I put in sling with thick cardigan, booties and hat and mittens as needed, and wrapped blanket over outside of sling and tucked in if really cold days. But usually they have you coat wrapped half over and your body heat also

CurlewKate · 21/09/2025 12:23

Ds had a snow suit. I used to feed him, change his nappy then put him in the snowsuit. Then sort him out properly when I got home.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/09/2025 14:09

Mine only really wore vest and sleepsuits with maybe zip up hoodies or little jackets over the top. If really cold then a pramsuit (only really dec and jan)

TheBirdintheCave · 21/09/2025 15:07

My daughter was in a vest, onesie, cardigan and blanket.

welshweasel · 21/09/2025 15:24

A vest and babygro will be fine for the car seat. Mine were both born in January and didn’t need more than that - you can tuck a cellular blanket over them once you’ve strapped them in. You shouldn’t use cardigans/coats/pramsuits in the car seat.

I used to put my stretchy sling on before I left the house so when I arrived wherever I was going I would put the baby straight from the car into the sling, your body heat keeps them warm.

If you’re putting them into the pram then just tuck a blanket over them. I never really understood the point of a pram suit for babies - only really for older kids that kick blankets off!

MissRainbowBrite · 21/09/2025 15:27

If you’re doing the morning run in the car then as others have said, leave them in what they’ve been to bed in and I used to add a knitted cardigan plus a blanket for their legs. We were only gone half an hour so got them dressed when we got back.

rosydreams · 21/09/2025 15:51

depends the season temp

but for cooler weather vest, sleepsuit cardigan ,blanket .I would use the pram but if your using a sling make sure their face is not covered .They sometimes roll with movement and their face gets covered

if it was cold just not mild i would use a fleecy thinner snowsuit over the vest/sleepsuit .I find snowsuits come in varying thickness so i buy one thick and one thinner fleecy type .So when it gets more than cold like icy i use the snowsuit

When they reach around 5 months thats when i start vest, top, trousers as they start to get mobile .But i dont bother if its just a school run and just use vest/sleepsuit with varying layers .I generally use outfits nice clothes when seeing friends or family and vest/top/trousers for more than a school run
