Charming, might be just as well if yours IS in childcare 10 hours a day.

You've literally never had him in a room while a TV (by that I mean TV, Laptop screen, tablet screen) is switched on?
That's very unusual.
By "downtime" I meant tidying up etc. Not sitting doing nothing. But again it's an unnatural environment to constantly be doing activities hands on with the children.
If you are at home with your child there are times when you sit down to drink a cup of tea while your child plays by themselves for 5 minutes or you go to go clean the toilet.

I've never had this. My baby is 8 months. No screens. It's not hard. It's important.

I went to nursery 20 mins early..I'm fuming

Ask for their screen time policy. How old is your child and what was the age group of children watching (ie are they in a baby room or in with older children?)

Needmorelego · 17/09/2025 19:05

Staff need downtime too.
They aren't robots.

Are you joking. Their downtime is their lunch break. I'm a teacher, I don't get downtime to play videos.

Iocainepowder · 17/09/2025 21:30

I wouldn’t give a toss about this tbh. I know it would only be for a little bit, nowhere near a situation where they are plonked in front if a screen all day.

WertieBooster · 17/09/2025 21:31

I would be very annoyed. I made sure mine didn’t have any screen time before the age of 2. It was hard on me, especially on a a dark winter’s night (anytime after 3pm in the dead of winter) when I was dying to just sit down and stick CBBies on.

.. I’d be so, so cross if I was actually paying for childcare and they thought it was okay to take the easy route, when I wouldn’t allow myself to do that.

NormasArse · 17/09/2025 21:39

We very occasionally do this. The children are all collected between 5 and 6. Some of them have been there since 7:30- they’re tired. At the end of the day (last 20 minutes or so), we sometimes put songs on the iPad and prop it where they can see it. Some play with Duplo; some look at books, and some watch the songs. We are in the room, but usually making sure all children are toileted before they leave.

These are pre-schoolers- not under twos.

Under 2

Not on. I would be furious. This is way too young to be gawping at a screen.

usedtobeaylis · 17/09/2025 21:44

Needmorelego · 17/09/2025 19:27

@Tealpins sorry but for what was probably 10 minutes I don't think it's a problem.
Under 2s at home will see a bit of TV as a part of normal family life.
Mine sat "watching" football at 2 weeks old held in the arms of her dad and then spent the next 6 months "watching" Gilmore Girls daily with me while I fed her.

There's a difference between parents making that decision and nurseries taking that decision out of their hands. It's pretty well accepted that parents are the arbiters of screen time.

Mischance · 17/09/2025 21:44

OP - does your child watch any TV at home?

Nottodaythankyou123 · 17/09/2025 21:47

savoycabbage · 17/09/2025 18:50

It isn’t. I’ve worked in so many nurseries and schools (I do supply) and I have never this.

My kids are at an “Outstanding” private nursery. After lunch and before the morning pick ups (12.40-1), some of the younger ones have a nap, and the older ones have 20 mins of watching something on the TV (Ben & Holly etc). This is in the toddler / pre-school room, there’s no screens in the baby room.

I don’t have a problem with it at all, both of my girls have a blast at nursery (well my eldest has just started school but she did), they do so many enriching activities and trips - 20 mins of wind down tv isn’t going to hurt. Every nursery I looked at did something similar, as do all my friends kids nurseries 🤷🏼‍♀️

And there is no way that my toddler will be allowed TV at that age. We have 'family time' in other ways.

Yes. TV I want to watch.

Bare in mind I work m-f.

I don't put on kids shows. On the weekends I've been blessed with good weather so it's easy to go outside..not sure what I'll do at 4pm darkness

I'm just concerned I don't know how much they have now

This would be a hard no from me, and I was on the thread the other day about Alphablocks and Numberblocks in Reception saying it was probably fine. My son is allowed to watch some telly but he will never be given a tablet because I’ve seen the effects they can have on kids. They’re very addictive and mess with their dopamine.

Your child will have to have a tablet at one point

OP posts:
Bubbles332 · 17/09/2025 22:33

It also depends on WHAT they were watching. I’m anti-tablet but people have mentioned Ben & Holly and Bluey above and I let mine watch those on the TV. They’ve got fairly muted colours, not too many cuts and a story (Nanny Plum cracks me up). If it’s on and I say my son’s name, he’ll turn around because he isn’t completely zombified by it. Tablet to my suggests Cocomelon or Dancing Fruits or something which are just too high contrast, too repetitive, too many cuts and too absorbing. I would be annoyed at the tablet thing generally but my level of annoyance would be influenced by what they were watching.

It was something low energy. I don't have an issue with that.

To be fair I have got form for going back on my parenting aspirations, but it’s good to aim high!

My eldest has a tablet for the car when she’s playing up (fairly long commute, she’s not really a fan of the car, I’m not a fan of crashing bc I’m distracted), and tbh I think it’s more parenting than the tablet. She has access if she wants it (usually after school) but also likes singing songs, playing games, chatting.

I’ve never really limited her screen time but also encouraged imaginative play, drawing, reading, playing outside etc, and she’s now a bright and articulate 4 year old with an incredible attention span, who can sit and watch a whole Disney film or spend 2 hours playing doctors with her teddies. I think in moderation it’s really not a problem, I mean in my experience anyway it’s had no detrimental impact at all; it’s only when they’re shoved in front of it 24/7 with no outside time or playtime etc.

What did they say when you queried it?

Sounds perfectly reasonable tk me. After a long day in childcare they need to be able to wind down just listening to music while puttering or watching something gentle.

padronpepper · 17/09/2025 23:36

Why can one of the staff not sit and read a book with them?

So they were "watching telly" really.
Quite normal for childcare - especially when children are there all day.

Absolutely not the same as watching telly. Tablets give out loads of blue light which interferes with the production of melatonin.
