Makes me wonder how often it's done....

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’ve worked in plenty of nurseries in the uk and yes this has been done in most of them. It’s not all the time, usually after lunch or just before pick up time. It might be number blocks or songs on i player or YouTube. If there is a theme we may have shown a video connected to it, like stickman etc (to compliment the book not instead of). Nurseries have routines so it wouldn’t be during set activity times. As long as it’s not all day long it’s not going to stunt their development.

It isn’t fine though. You read them a story or play music while they lie down if they need downtime. You don’t give them an iPad.

Staff need downtime too.
They aren't robots.

savoycabbage · 17/09/2025 18:50

It isn’t. I’ve worked in so many nurseries and schools (I do supply) and I have never this.

What never ever?
I doubt that.
Schools TV has existed since 1957. I'm sure it's been used in some of the schools/nurseries you've worked in.

We're talking about under 2s! The baby room. I really don't think TVs were being wheeled into the baby room at good nurseries in the 1990s. In fact, I know they weren't.

Of course staff need breaks. These should be in the break room not with the children.

Childcare done by private providers, paying minimum wage, with insufficient staff to do adequate breaks, so the babies get shoved in front of a tablet. Nah. Not good childcare. Not acceptable. OP is probably paying more than a thousand quid a month for this.

ClassicalQueen · 17/09/2025 19:24

It’s not ideal but I couldn’t get too worked up about this, it’s giving PFB. Have you spoken to the nursery about the context of this? I’d like to think it’s a one off.

Needmorelego · 17/09/2025 19:27

@Tealpins sorry but for what was probably 10 minutes I don't think it's a problem.
Under 2s at home will see a bit of TV as a part of normal family life.
Mine sat "watching" football at 2 weeks old held in the arms of her dad and then spent the next 6 months "watching" Gilmore Girls daily with me while I fed her.

olololive · 17/09/2025 19:37

I wouldn’t be happy about this. At 2-3 DD talked lots about the “sensory room” which sounded amazing but turned out to be a room with a massive telly in it. Funnily enough she thought it was brilliant.

Irotoyu · 17/09/2025 19:45

Absolutely not. I'm not paying hundreds for this shite. There is no reason for a nursery to use screen time at all.

beautyqueeen · 17/09/2025 19:51

Why didn’t you ask at the time? No one here can answer your question especially as you’ve given minimal context.

ACR7 · 17/09/2025 19:53

So what was the explanation when you raised it?

They do get downtime. At 5pm, like the rest of us. Until then, they get paid to work.

It's lazy as fuck and absolutely not ok to give a 1 year old a tablet.

I have a 14 month old and he's never watched a single screen, it's really not that hard.

You've literally never had him in a room while a TV (by that I mean TV, Laptop screen, tablet screen) is switched on?
That's very unusual.
By "downtime" I meant tidying up etc. Not sitting doing nothing. But again it's an unnatural environment to constantly be doing activities hands on with the children.
If you are at home with your child there are times when you sit down to drink a cup of tea while your child plays by themselves for 5 minutes or you go to go clean the toilet.

Overthebow · 17/09/2025 20:09

Needmorelego · 17/09/2025 18:20

So they were "watching telly" really.
Quite normal for childcare - especially when children are there all day.

No it’s not normal for childcare, especially for under 2s. I really wouldn’t be happy with this.

Needmorelego · 17/09/2025 20:13

Ok everyone....I think we need to agree to disagree.
I'm off from this thread.
Bye all.

coxesorangepippin · 17/09/2025 20:22

Unacceptable

They need to be coloring or whatever

Not just watching the TV or iPad no.

Clips on BBC bitesize or at wet playtime. I mostly teach EYFS so two to six year olds.

savoycabbage · 17/09/2025 20:32

And on reflection, I can’t actually remember the last time I saw a wet play time tv.

Hellenbach · 17/09/2025 20:36

Ex Ofsted inspector for early years.. it’s pretty poor practice. There’s no guidelines but iPads should only be used for information/fact finding that can’t be gathered first hand for preschool children.
theres no educational value in sedentary screen watching for babies.

Bubbles332 · 17/09/2025 20:45

This would be a hard no from me, and I was on the thread the other day about Alphablocks and Numberblocks in Reception saying it was probably fine. My son is allowed to watch some telly but he will never be given a tablet because I’ve seen the effects they can have on kids. They’re very addictive and mess with their dopamine.

Nope, never. TV is turned off at all times while my son is awake. I have never shown him a show/film on my phone. DH and I have home offices, where baby is not allowed, so no reason for him to be in front of a laptop.

He does play by himself, of course we have to leave him to it here and there. Which is why he has a playpen.

A nursery doesn't have the same problem as a SAHM who is home alone all day anyway. There is several staff. One watches, the other one cleans.

A TV in the background here and there while visiting grandparents and grandad is watching football or whatever is unavoidable. But for a nursery worker, who gets paid to be there and care for your child, to actively put a tablet in front of a 1 year old is pretty bad.

Well, they need to not be in childcare 10 hours a day.
