Induction gas 3 year old

My three year old went for tonsillectomy last week, beforehand we watched the kids journey and in the video they used the mask to put the child to sleep. When we got down there, there was no mask for the gas, just straight to needle in the back of hand. DS screamed, kicked and had to be held down by me. I never asked why he didn't get the gas, did anything like this happen to your children?

They don't generally use the gas unless the child has previously struggled with the needle. Emma cream and injection was the default for us, ds had multiple occasions of surgery in childhood

My son had a tonsillectomy last summer OP and he did have the gas first. He was young though, 16 months so not sure if that was a factor, but had the gas mask first and needle went in after. He’d had needles several times before (cannula for antibiotics, blood tests for allergies) and it’s traumatic for them and us so I really feel for you, especially if you weren’t expecting it
