Cycling in a school skirt

DD has started school (aged 4) and cycled to school. However her school skirt / pinafore / summer dresses are knee length and I've noticed the hem resting on the wheel. Does anyone know any tips and tricks to stop her school uniform from getting dirty or ruined? Note, changing at school is not an option as there is nowhere to change before the school bell. Thanks in advance.

Could she wear cycling shorts or leggings then put the skirt over them and take the shorts off? She could do that in the playground.

Joggers and squish the skirt into the joggers and hang them in a bag on her peg when she gets to school?

Shorts and just pop the skirt on and take the shorts off.

Thanks all. Just to reply to the group and in case anyone else is in the same spot. We bought mudguards to stop the mud flicking up from the road, and simply tied the back of her skirt with a hair bobble to stop it trailing down. Works well. I think tucking pinafore / skirt into joggers would have a similar effect. The journey is only 10 minutes so hair bobble may not stay tied for longer journeys.

We went with this rather than a changing option as it's been quite cold where we are, and if she is wearing a pinafore it's not ideal for her to take off all her layers in the playground to get it on.

Or she could simply wear trousers?

Get some over trousers for the winter months

BigHouseLittleHouse · 15/09/2025 09:43

Great idea.

Tuck it into her knickers to shorten it

Indeed. So much more sensible than a skirt tied with a bobble but heaven forbid girls wear sensible clothes that are practical and keep them warm. Hmm

Mine wears cycling shorts under her skirt (cotton, part of the PE uniform. She just tucks the back into her shorts and untucks at school. The shorts stay on all day.

if she wears tights she does the same thing, they’re very thick grey tights so you can’t see underwear through them.

Google Dress Guards for bikes - they’re a thing and if you're nifty with a knitting needle you could probably make a bespoke one (no pun intended) for her bike.

Just stick leggings on and tuck her skirt/dress in to them and when she gets to school, take them off.
