8 month old refusing expressed breast milk suddenly

My breastfed baby has suddenly started refusing expressed milk on a bottle. She was always fine with drink my milk from a bottle even if I gave it to her. I brought the next size up teet and she would not drink it so u went back down to the teet she’s used to and she still refused. She just chews on the teet. I have my first concert in the next few days and I didn’t want to have to cancel. I’ve tried spoon feeding her milk, giving from her cup, a random cup and and a syringe and she refuses but will drink a few sips of water and eat a lot of food. I’m thinking if trying breast milk smoothies to see if that will fill the gap while I go out but I’m afraid that won’t work. And for background she breast feeds still every 1.5-2 hours at most 😭 Any tips ?? Will she be fine with no breast milk all day but loads of food and a few sips of water???

How long will you be away from her for?

Muminneed3 · 05/09/2025 18:12

How is she at eating? If she's having a good amount of foods and liquids she'll probably be ok without much milk for a day.

I know this is decades ago but my brother had reflux as a baby and refused ALL milk - breastmilk, formula, cows milk - from six months onwards. He didn't have a drop after six months, just solids and usual drinks, and grew fine. So although it's not recommended I imagine your LO will be fine without milk for eight hours as long as she's eating and drinking other things

My baby totally refused bottles around 8 months, I was breastfeeding and DH/the nanny were giving bottles of expressed milk while I was out. I'm afraid we never did go back to bottles.

However he was on 3 meals a day by 8 months. I breastfed morning, evening and all night.

He was definitely hungry, he just "reversed cycled" I.e. started breastfeeding every 2 hours all night.

It's a downside of breastfeeding unfortunately, until they're on proper food you can't leave them.

If I ever have the courage to have a second baby, I wouldn't breastfeed.

*also just to add, he had reflux/severe pain with milk but not with solids, which I think is why he refused milk as soon as he could

Can you try and get in 2 feeds before you go? Mine would accept a cup of milk if I had been gone for a while. LO might well do that Flowers

I will feed her as much as I can before I go but she feeds every 2 hours sometimes less. She refused to drink from a cup when she realised it was milk 😭
