School run

Am I the only parent not excited that their children are going back to school? I absolutely despise the school run and can't wait to never do it again (no I will NOT miss it) I hate it so much people have told me I will miss it but clearly they don't know me as I won't 😂 can't wait till it's finally over I've been doing it for almost 10 years and I've done every single school run (never had any help with it) can anyone else not wait till it's over? I know plenty of people love it so I'm just wondering if anyone else is like me and hates it

No because it’s all the same to me I’m still going to work, I just stop at the school half way to leave them off.

Luxio · 03/09/2025 14:14

I enjoy the school run as it's so rare I get to actually take my child to school due to work.

If you've been doing it so long surely there will be a point soon where your children can make their own way to school?

InMyOpenOnion · 03/09/2025 14:16

I suppose it depends on the school run. We used to walk, was about five minutes. School had a small catchment and I knew lots of friendly people there. So I miss certainly the morning run, less so the afternoon though. But if you have a stressful drive and don't like the other parents then I can see why you wouldn't miss it!

Why do you find it such an awful chore? I mean, I can't say I thought it was fabulous fun, or anything, but compared to other aspects of my daily life, it was neutral at worst, and nice to catch a brief glimpse of your child interacting with their friends, set up a playdate or whatever. I enjoyed it far more at DS's second primary school, as his friends' parents were lovely, and my commute was far briefer, so less dashing about.

PlantDoctor · 03/09/2025 14:19

Mine is a short walk and I do have some friends I chat to, but I still won't miss it. It's always a rush!

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/09/2025 14:21

I only got 7 years over 2 kids, including 2 years of just walking them to the school bus stop. Couldn't wait to stop when youngest was on yr5... really didn't enjoy just be completely ignored!

redgingerbread · 03/09/2025 14:24

What’s so bad about it - is there anything you could change to make it easier on you? Ours is a 3-min walk (and en route to the station so handy for office days) so it’s no skin off my nose.

PlodAlongPolly · 03/09/2025 14:26

I don’t mind the drive and actual drop off but it’s the stress of the rushed mornings that get to me!

I’ve determined to become a lark and get up extra early to make the mornings run smoother. I don’t know why but the school mornings dissolve away in what feels like 5 minutes! Pick up’s not so bad I find (much more chilled leaving as no kids to round up and get out the door 😅)

DappledThings · 03/09/2025 14:28

I've never known anyone in real life have any strong feelings about it, positive or negative. It's no big deal, you walk or drive a bit, stand around a bit, chat a bit and repeat.

Thank you nice it's not just me

I found it a bit of a pain. School was a 15 min walk in the opposite direction to my bustop for work so it was a half hour out of my way.

I liked the time chatting to my children though so it wasn't that bad.

SummerNightsDream · 03/09/2025 15:50

My kids come out in bad moods or arguing so there isn't even that aspect for me sadly!

I hate it too , fed up with stuck up bitches .

PurpleChrayn · 03/09/2025 15:53

I actually quite enjoy it, and the school gate chat. I work alone at home in quite a solitary profession so it’s nice to see people.

Jk987 · 03/09/2025 15:53

Get Dad to do his share.

Glitterballofdreams · 03/09/2025 15:53

I don’t like the afternoon school run, the traffic and horrendous lack of parking.

bitterexwife · 03/09/2025 15:57

I hate it too. Luckily I have three children just one primary year apart as I have twins. Hate hate hate it. The kids are fine, I actually love picking them up, and they go in perfectly without me…. But it’s the time worry of being on time, carrying three book bags and whatever they’ve created that day out of recycling.
I also have no friends at school gate, nor do I have some shit hot respectable career… so really nothing to talk about with others. Luckily my kids are nice boys and often invited to parties, but very rarely play dates, and I’m fully aware that’s down to me

No unfortunately nothing I can do to change it. DD is happy and settled at her school and has some good friends so wouldn't want to move her, if it was only a 3 minute walk I probably wouldn't hate it so much. I have 3 more years left then it's done.

Yeah my daughter likes her school it's just me that hates it 🥲 it will be a good day when I don't have to do it anymore.

I just said this yesterday, upon them starting back, it’s just like anything that becomes mundane! The getting out the door in the morning, no it’s not the same as just getting yourself up and off to work. Having to drop things to run to the school again. There are also a few people who are not very nice, I have a small group of women, of which one is obsessed with me she will say things and all her group turn, never had any issue with them, no it’s not in my imagination, they don’t even have kids in my child’s year. Makes me feel uncomfortable. Then I have to remind myself we won’t have the sense of community and network when they get older, then that’s a whole new problem on it’s own!

Agree it's nothing like just getting yourself ready for work I have kids in different schools so it's such an absolute pain

I'm not sure anyone positively looks forward to it in such weather but most of us find it completely tolerable and not the cause of any angst.
