Hi

has anyone else’s child gone through SALT and it’s worked wonders? My child’s been doing it since reception and whilst she is better I honestly just don’t have any hope that it’s going to get better and I’m going to be stuck with an angry child who can’t communicate

We’ve had private SALT for years. I have no idea if it’s helped. From age 2-5 there was progress but it was desperately slow and it was more about communicating strategies. I had to fill out a questionnaire recently and in summary my child went from 0-1 word age 2 to stringing together two words age 5.

The biggest change happened just before starting school at 6y and I think from watching and copying loads from TV. In the three years since his speech and language has really blossomed and can mostly make himself understood, advocate for himself, express needs, and we can have limited conversations about his interests. But at age 8 it’s still at the level of a 4yo.

I think private SALT was helpful in teaching me how to validate my child’s speech and language. And that’s helped him. I’m not sure SALT helped him directly as he has made progress outside of it with many leaps during holidays and time off (like Covid lockdown) rather than because of it.
