Hi everyone!
My 5 months old baby girl has foot hand mouth disease, she is already doing much better, couple more days and all the spots will probably be gone, but I caught the virus from her and I'm absolutely miserable. Anyway she is exclusively breastfed baby and I know breastfeeding while sick it's okay, even beneficial, nap I'm not concerned about that. From few weeks I'm trying to buil up the stash of breast milk in my freezer. Of course with foot hand mouth my whole hands are covered with spots, I am a little of a germaphobe and I keep asking my husband to handle washing, assembling and transfering milk from pump to bags, but I still do all the pumping and well, touching breast and everything.
I keep thinking that I somehow transfering virus to my milk though my nipples or hands, in the same time my baby already almost recovered from the virus not mentioning my antibodies are probably in the milk as well. I really don't want to dump the milk as I worked hard for it, but I don't want my baby to go through the illness again if she drink the milk in couple months for example (I plan to freeze the milk). I feel like silly goose but maybe someone could shed some light how does it work?

Can you put the stash in a separate box in the freezer so that next week when you're recovered you can use it to replace feeds so that you can then pump a lot of "clean" milk. How much of a stash do you actually realistically need? It doesn't keep indefinitely even in the freezer and it's better to give as fresh as possible both for taste and to make the antibodies as current as possible.

Your daughter can't catch this strain of HFM virus again, so I would stop worrying. She could catch a different strain in future, but not this one.

Also HFMV is an RNA virus and they don't like being frozen very much. All particles will be dead after 24h or so in the freezer.

If you're anything like me, it's not the actual expressing that's stressing you, but everything else. I'm really most stressed about baby starting daycare, but that's too big and indefinite a worry, so it comes out in panic if I don't get just one more 50ml into the freezer because that's all that's standing between him and starvation! Never mind that I work 5mins walk from daycare so can pop over or they can give him that wonderful stuff called formula Wink He had his first trial day yesterday and now I'm much happier
