IKEA Antilop or Stokke Tripp Trapp?

Looking to start weaning with DD nearly 6 months. Can anyone recommend a good highchair? I’m undecided between the Ikea and the Tripp Trapp. I like that the Antilop looks easy to clean but I’ve got a small dining space and not sure if I’d be better with the Tripp Trapp that could hopefully be tucked under the table?

Any other good recommendations?

I have both.

The Antilop is cheap and light, but the tray is vvv hard to remove so it's not easy to clean unless you buy the removable mat that fits the tray. It also has a lip so not even easy to wipe off in situ.

You will also spend your life kicking the legs as they come wider than the chair.

That said the inflatable chair liner is excellent for little ones.

We use it at our holiday home and for that it's absolutely fine.

The trip trap is excellent, no notes apart from the eye watering expense.

We found the Antilop very easy to deal with; our kids were 18 months apart and we had two of them because DD was still using hers when DS was ready for one. We loved them.

Look for a 2nd hand trip trapp, get an IKEA one until the right one pops up on marketplace

Thank you. I’m scouring marketplace for a secondhand one at the moment. I’m kicking myself as I found a few good deals last week but decided to leave it until we’d returned from holiday, typical!

We got the Antilop on the basis that it was so cheap that if it didn’t work out it’d make a good highchair to keep at the grandparents for visits (especially since it’s so easy to take the legs off).

I had my eye on the Tripp Trapp too (it’s definitely prettier) but no regrets here

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/08/2025 18:50

Tripp Trapp, DTs are 13 now and we still use them, they are oddly comfy.

Ygfrhj · 08/08/2025 18:51

I've used the Antilop in various restaurants and holiday homes and never managed to avoid tripping up over its legs! I got a second hand Stokke for home.

Bit of a cross post ha. I had lots saved that have now of course sold.

Will keep refreshing, thank you.

I’ve just come back from Spain, where we had one in the apartment and I did constantly trip on it tooGrin

im parenting again after a huge break and I’ve bought the antilop again (second hand) this time with the insert and harness! It’s in my small kitchen and stuck on the end of the table and im clumsy, ive never tripped over it! I also think they are easy to clean. That said I’ve know loads of people use and love Tripp traps. But I spent 15 on the antilop!

Absolutely this. We had a small dining area and table and the IKEA one was not only way too big but took little one away from dining table and it almost didn't feel they were part of mealtimes.

We actually bought a serving hand wooden one like the ones they get in pubs, like this:
https://www.nisbets.co.uk/bolero-wooden-highchair-dark-wood-finish

Slotted nicely under the table and felt like DC was actually dining with us!

johnd2 · 08/08/2025 22:24

I refused to get tripp trapp at first due to aiming it was designed to rip gullible parents off. But after getting one for our eldest so the youngest could take over the high chair we realise it was so good it was worth getting two.
Easy to clean, stable, and good looking, however money has to be no object! Especially if you want to add the baby set.

Cinnabonswirl · 08/08/2025 22:28

I think the Tripp trapp is actually so hard to clean! I’m amazed people are saying it’s easy to clean I must be doing something wrong. I have to take it apart every few weeks to get in all the nooks and cranny’s that are always disgusting. It always looks dirty. For the price I’d get the ikea one. But if you can get a Tripp trap second hand then maybe it’s worth it, it obviously looks nicer in your kitchen and in theory has more longevity.

Randomsabreur · 08/08/2025 22:29

The fake tripp trapp that we got from 1 of Aldi/Lidl (Hauck Alpha plus I think) was almost as good as the real one but has the same sticky out legs problem as the Antilop. My toes hated all high chairs (narrow dining room on way to kitchen...)

Friends kids stuck with their tripp trapp until 10 or so, mine flat out refused any kind of not grown up chair once they were tall enough that their mouth was level with the table so it depends on the kids' personalities how much use you will get our of it.

Whaleadthesnail · 08/08/2025 22:31

We got our trip traps and the tray and bits and pieces on marketplace. Love them as when the kids are ready to sit at the table they just look like normal chairs. It's also recommended for weaning babies/toddlers to have their feet firmly planted rather than dangling which the trip trap does.

The legs on the IKEA ones drive me nuts and the tray is impossible to take on and off

JustAMum35 · 08/08/2025 22:35

We had the ikea one when we first started weaning and it was great. So easy just to wash down! It occasionally got moved straight outside and hosed down 😆
We then bought the Hauck Alpha+ and DS loves it and still uses it every day now at 5 😊

leaningtowerofchampions · 08/08/2025 22:36

There’s definitely a knack to removing the tray on the Ikea one but I can’t remember it now. If it comes to me I’ll report back! But the big plus of the Ikea one for us was it could even go in the dishwasher if we wanted to give it a big clean 🧼
Easiest high chair to clean ever and perfect for our reflux babies! I didn’t trip over it any more than any other high chair tbh. We also liked that we could just remove the legs and pop it in the boot of our car if we were visiting friends/family as well. It’s a great buy.

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/08/2025 22:37

We had a Tripp trap and a fake (hauck) one, both pretty good. We ended up with a tray for the Tripp trap (not made by Stokke) which was a bit of a godsend at times. We liked both but if you have the space the antilop is excellent value and will last several children. I’m not sure there is much of a second hand market for them as so cheap whereas there definitely is for the Tripp traps.

Blinderina · 08/08/2025 22:58

We had the Ikea Antilop and the trick to getting the tray off is understanding what order to undo the clips. This video explains it really well. It is an incredibly easy chair to clean and you can remove the legs for transporting.

We had the BabyDan rip off of the tripp trapp which is much cheaper. The children used them until they were about 8 or 9 so we definitely got our money's worth and the footrest and seat can be moved as they grow. I think there can be issues with the chair actually slotting under the table if it has a deep side to it. This may or may not be an issue, it will either sit against the table or slide under. It is the two side bits I am talking about.

Tripp Trapp grows with your child. We have two and our 5 and 8 year olds use them every day at our kitchen table. Even adults can sit on them. Yes expensive but can see ours lasting 10+ years at least

Namechangerage · 08/08/2025 23:58

Not cheap but KAOS Klapp - it folds up and is great for small places

pigeonowl · 09/08/2025 14:48

Thank you all. I decided to go with the Tripp Trapp. I found a few on marketplace, one being a 3 hour round trip away but was gone within 15 minutes of being postedConfused

I ended up ordering it brand new with the baby set, hoping we get lots of years of use. I’ve gone with the baby set without the tray as I’ve read the tray isn’t great. Hoping it can just fit under my table but will order an off brand one if not.

Does anyone know if I’ll need the harness too?

Me too!! DDs are now 19 & 24 so the Tripp Trapps are members of our family 😂
they have more than paid their own way!

RainbowSlimeLab · 09/08/2025 15:10

Tripp trapp. It was the only expensive thing I bought for dd. 5 years later it’s going strong.

use Antilop in nursery. Not a fan.

drivinmecrazy · 09/08/2025 15:14

We went with the baby set, largely cos the tray wasn’t available then 😂
we didn’t find a need for a harness tbh because when they are tiny you wouldn’t leave them alone anyway.
the baby bar was enough to keep ours contained
