IKEA Antilop or Stokke Tripp Trapp?

Looking to start weaning with DD nearly 6 months. Can anyone recommend a good highchair? I’m undecided between the Ikea and the Tripp Trapp. I like that the Antilop looks easy to clean but I’ve got a small dining space and not sure if I’d be better with the Tripp Trapp that could hopefully be tucked under the table?

Any other good recommendations?

Can I ask, why would you need or want a tray with the TT?

Motherdoodle · 09/08/2025 15:19

I loved the tray, but didn't need a harness. Only buy one if you end up with a wriggler!

Tripp trap.

The dining table I have is round, so not sure if the seat is going to line up well enough. Ideally I’d have it just tucked under the table though.

How did you use yours?

Sorry, just seen you used the babyset! Did you just tuck it under the table?

Oo interesting to know. I’ll leave the harness for now, she’s 6 months so won’t be left unattended in it at all. We’re not at the climbing stage so I’ll see how I get on.

My daughter is 3.5 and still uses her Tripp Trapp every day. A friend who is a SALT recommended it because she said the adjustable foot test was a good feature. We did use the tray when she was a baby because it could go straight in the dishwasher but we did also use it pushed up to to the table. I got ours on eBay

pigeonowl · 09/08/2025 15:45

They’re on offer on Natural Baby Shower if anyone is interested. I went with the Oak Warm Brown which was £219 not including the babyset. The beech and coloured versions are on sale too.

We also didn’t use a harness. It’s coming back to me now that the baby seat attachment prevented us from being able to push the seat right under the table - problem something to do with the exact snap and size of our table!

That’s great to know, thank you. I’ve seen reviews that say the stokke tray is a pain to clean because of the ridges on the underside and doesn’t work with suction bowls. Did you find it okay?

Interestingly (probs only to me!) the price hasn’t changed that much to when we bought our first one 23 years ago 😂

Fleur405 · 09/08/2025 15:52

Yes the trick with the tray is to put it into the dishwasher at an angle with the top facing up. Our dishwasher has a sort of special rack on the bottom for baking trays that worked well. We didn’t have suction bowls so I can’t answer that I’m afraid!

HanSB · 09/08/2025 16:17

Tripp Trapp, my ten year old still uses it! We also had the Antilop but the legs were annoying so only had it a few months

Definitely don't need a harness then!

I liked the tray as sometimes babies eat in the kitchen with me while I'm cooking, or I give them some play dough or colouring if I want them contained. At family meal times at the table I take it off and tuck it in. Slightly annoying with a round table (which we have) but fine from 18mo.

Not suggesting you should give your 6mo play dough! Just saying I found the tray useful up to 18mo.

justasoul · 09/08/2025 16:30

Just commenting as the tray didn’t exist when DD was a baby and we had a round table: the chair works fine, OP, just tucks in like a normal chair. We also still have ours even though DD is 16, we all sit in it occasionally now Grin

NotAMessiahJustAVeryNaughtyBoy · 09/08/2025 16:36

I don’t have the Tripp trapp as I frankly can’t afford it. The antilop is great though. When it’s really messy we take it outside and hose it down. I had an expensive, over padded highchair that reclined and shit for my first baby that a well meaning relative bought us which was bulky as hell and a bitch to clean properly. Just glad it wasn’t me that wasted over £100 on it…

GirlofInkandStars · 09/08/2025 19:06

We went for the antilop and it was great for the baby stage - but with hindsight I wish we’d have gone for the Tripp trap as it would have been much more versatile for toddlers and small children - but it didn’t seem worth buying one later on.

stargirl1701 · 09/08/2025 19:08

Both.

Rockhopper81 · 09/08/2025 19:21

I bought a Tripp Trapp off Marketplace, and also got an infant seat and baby set off there, so we’ve been using it since LO was tiny - I could never justify the price new, but I got some really good deals from FB (you do need to look regularly). We have the tray as well (Marketplace again - none of it was bought new!) because it didn’t fit under the temporary table we had when we started weaning; it’s now been handy for feeding LO away from the table, or if they need more help.

My niece and nephew are still using their Tripp Trapps at 8 and 12, so I figured it was a long term plan!

pambeesleyhalpert · 09/08/2025 19:22

I’d recommend the Kinderkraft which is like the TT but so much cheaper. It’s been fantastic. Before that I had the joie spin which I don’t recommend. My almost 4 yr old refused her high chair from about 1 then we went away and they had the KK and she loved jr so we got her and my younger daughter one and they both still absolutely love it

BarnacleBeasley · 09/08/2025 19:26

We have tripp trapps and do use the tray for the little one as we did baby led weaning and didn't want food smeared all over our table. Also we had those massive bibado bibs that go over the tray, which don't work so well at the table. It's true that the Stokke one is shit with suction bowls though.

We weren't bothering to do the harness up with DS2 until the day he stood up and tried to plunge head first onto the floor.

DS1 still happily uses his tripp trapp and he is 4.

NoTouch · 09/08/2025 19:35

The Tripp trapp we bought is 20+ years old and now handed on and used by my great niece. They also got our Dutailier glider chair and footstool, also 20+ years old. Both well used by us but almost new looking still, were really good quality brands back when we bought.

Madcats · 09/08/2025 19:48

DD is 18, but we used her Tripp Trapp for a good decade (shifting the seat and foot rest about). We bought it early as we knew we’d be having a toddler stay but I discovered that the back made it really comfy as a chair whilst pregnant.

I don’t think we used the harness more than a handful of times.

Buy a PVC table cloth for your table.

Cinnabonswirl · 09/08/2025 21:06

The tray is great. It works with the bibado bibs, I also use a catchy which saves about 70% of the food from the floor and is easier to clean.
nothing sticks well to the tray but I don’t find suction bowls work on my table either, it took dd about 3 seconds at 6m to figure out how to break the seal.
I never pull her up to the table because then she is grabbing at everything, smearing food and banging on the dining table and it’s harder to clean, the tray just comes off and I can scrape into the bin and put it in the dishwasher.

I used the harness at first but found it useless so took it off. It feels like it would be in the way if I needed to get her out quickly too eg choking. And the tray seems to make it much harder to climb out too.

milkandblackspiders · 09/08/2025 21:12

We had both the antilop and the tripp trapp. The antilop os great when they are tiny and want to make a mess of the tray, as you can just detach it and wash it all off in the sink, and the tripp trapp is better when they get a bit bigger and want to sit at the table. Buy the tripp trapp second hand - they last forever, we bought ours second hand nearly 15 years ago and we still have it!
