School uniform and big headed kids

So I'm looking at my kids school uniform he's going to school in September. It's either over the sweatshirts (crew neck) or cardigan.

DS is blest (Or cursed) with a big head. He's 99 centile. It's stupid but he gets it from his dad who can't even find a bike helmet his size!

We don't buy sweatshirts because they don't go over his head or we have to buy two sizes up and then his clothes look really baggy. Same issue with t shirts so we try and get items either with buttons or loose neck.

What are our options. Do you think the school might let me edit the uniform by adding a button or something or is he forever going to have to have help and a fight to remove or put on the jumper. 🤦

I blame the husband of course

I had this with DS1 when he was little. I bought him the v neck woollen jumpers you get in all the school uniform departments. I think in most schools that would be fine, but some (especially academies) insist on logo jumpers.

Some school sweatshirts have poppers on the shoulder. Have a look at the adaptive range. I know Asda, M&S and John Lewis definitely do them. That may help and at that age once a jumper is off they very rarely ask for it to be put back on so won’t need help with the poppers.

I was hoping for like a fleece or something but the list says cardies or the sweatshirt 😮‍💨

Seems a bit harsh to me towards kids with large noggins.

Does school do zip-up fleeces or hoodies?

This thread made me smile because I also have a large-headed child! They can wear school jumpers but hoodies have to be 1-2sizes bigger

It's not on the list of accepted school uniform 😭

When he tries to get these kind of jumpers off it looks like he's wrestling the jumper. Then he comes out gasping. 🤣

My DC’s school cardigans are basically like a sweatshirt but has a v neck and buttons down the front. The cut and material is exactly the same as a sweatshirt. A lot of the reception and Y1 kids (both boys and girls) wear this as it’s easier for them to put on and take off rather than a sweatshirt over the head. Loads of boys wear the sweatshirt fabric cardigan in reception. You might find that the school are not that strict about what they wear. A fleece or v neck jumper may not be listed but it’s likely to be worn anyway.

Poodley · 07/08/2025 00:14

Is there a school WhatsApp group or something where you can ask about how strict they are? At our school it is officially a "v necked jumper" or cardigan (and a "dropped waist" pinafore 🫨) but in practice so long as they're the right colour no one cares.
