15mo withholding poo - advice!

My 15mo daughter is, I think, withholding her poos. She will only do one when asleep – often halfway through her nap or in the first few hours after going to bed at night, I assume because this is when she relaxes enough to do so. This normally happens every other day. I think it all stemmed from a period of constipation, which I now realised was caused by bananas (which she no longer eats).

While of course this can be a bit irritating, her pooing while asleep is not problematic in and of itself, but I would like to know how to help her before things get worse. She isn’t old enough to understand stories etc and she isn’t constipated, so laxatives are probably not a good idea. Does anyone have any other advice?

She might be too old but my DD does have constipation, quite badly. I spoke to the ERIC line & they suggested sitting her on the potty. I thought it was a bit of a laugh because she was only 7 months but now at nearly 9 months she goes on the potty almost every day & never in her nappy. The position really helps for sure! I’d also recommend ERIC too, they were so helpful x

That’s really interesting. Did you just put your daughter on when she woke up or throughout the day?

I know, honestly I did it out of desperation thinking it was a bit of a wild suggestion. Makes logical sense though. Only thing is my dd is young enough to take stuff like that without thought, hopefully your dd doesn’t resist. Definitely worth a try though! I would usually do it in the morning after breakfast or after subsequent meals if she hasn’t been yet that day. I’d have a book or fun toy to hand and some positive energy just in case 😅
