Nappy explosions every 3/4 days - is this normal??

I'm breastfeeding my 6 week old and until 4 weeks she was pooing 6-8 times a day. However, for the last 2 weeks, she's been going for 3/4 days, getting very restless and grumpy during the last day - and not sleeping at all for 8-10 hours - then filling her nappy to the brim (and beyond!) Is this normal? I'm concerned as it seems to have been accompanied by an increase in wind; she lays in her cot crying with pain for an hour at round about 5am most mornings now. Thanks!

I breastfed my DS. Likewise, he was pooing every day & when he got to 2 months old, he only pooed once a week (massive explosion), until he was weaned. I initially took him to the Drs who said he wasn't constipated.

I didnt have the restless & grumpy behaviour so can't speak for that. Perhaps ask your HV for advice re her tummy pain.

My one year old was also breastfeed, poo'ed everyday for the first few weeks but then went down to only every couple of days sometimes only once a week. I was worried but he was well and putting on plenty of week - followed the bottle fed chart despite only getting breast milk. From what I researched it appeared that breast milk is the perfect food for baby so nearly all of it is fully absorbed and utilised with very little waste. Hence the need for irregular poos. That might be what is going on with the pooing but does not explain the wind and pain. My DS also had some trouble with wind and pain - I had to cut out caffeine which helped a bit but not completely - went when on solids!
