I have an 11 day old newborn and I’ve woke up this morning feeling like I’m getting a cold sores on my lip, absolutely terrified - I’ve rang my midwife and she said just to be extremely careful obviously no kissing and ensuring hand washing and to apply cream, I’m just wondering if any other mothers have had cold sores with newborns and can calm my anxiety a little, it is so hard!

Hi OP I have a small baby and my husband gets cold sores too so we have been very conscious of this although so far he hasn't gotten one. I feel quite anxious about any kind of illness too. Would wearing a mask help when you were feeding/ holding the baby just until you know if you are getting one or not? My husband also has cold sore plasters that he usually puts on when he gets one. I'm not much help but wanted to respond because I understand how stressful the early weeks can be. Good luck

I had an awful cold sore not long after birth. I made sure no kisses, and lots of handwashing, and used the cold sore plasters and made a conscious effort not to touch it. And we were fine.

can I recommend lysine? I take it at the onset of a cold sore and it doesn’t get as big and doesn’t last as long.

Several of my friends got them at the same point. I suspect its your body crashing after everything. All their babies were fine, they just had to get daddy to give them extra cuddles until the cold sore was gone

I get them (when run down or too stressed). Childbirth is one of those times when your body is extremely run down afterwards so if you’re gonna get a cold sore - that is the time. I have 2 DCs, cold sores with both of them. Didn’t kiss them until they cleared up, washed my hands if I accidentally touched my lip, obviously didn’t do things like lick the dummy after it fell etc. Both kids are fine, neither get cold sores either now they’re bigger. Don’t overthink it, still cuddle your baby. They’ll be fine.
