Hi Everyone,
So our little one is now 3 and a half months old and was born with a full head of hair which she hasn't lost.
It's getting more unruly by the day but when we've tried hairbands she just pulls at them.
When can you start putting bobbles in their hair?
It's certainly long enough but I wasn't sure about the scalp being too tender.

At what age did you start putting bobbles in baby's hair?

It’s a choking hazard! You can’t.

Yes I do understand that with young babies. I was wondering at what age people started using bobbles and things?

Oh that is magnificent hair. Love it. Bobbles pull, and clips are a choking hazard. Hair gel?

Thank you. We are currently trying coconut oil but open to any other suggestions

You’d rather have to wash coconut oil out of your DD’s hair than trim it? Seriously?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Trimming is not an option so just looking for replies to my question about what age for using bobbles.
I appreciate everyone's advice and suggestions- the not cutting a babies hair is an important part of my husbands culture which I accept. The coconut oil can be a bit greasy agree, that's why I'm looking for other ideas - it's done wonders for her cradle cap though.

As you can’t cut it, I think I’d just try gently brushing off her face to try to encourage it to grow that way for now. And maybe something like a little mob cap might work better than bobbles? Perhaps not now but when she’s a bit older and starting to eat messy food it might help.

AmyDuPlantier · 04/07/2025 12:33

My daughter was exactly like this!

After it grew to a certain length it so of collapsed under its own weight and didn’t stick up so much any more 😆

I wouldn’t use clips on such a small baby, or I don’t think we did anyway! Just have to try to style it out really.

People used to stop us in the street to talk about her hair. It was a lot of fun 😆

gamerchick · 04/07/2025 12:39

If you had the same issue with your firstborn, what did you use for her?

I'm not a fan of long hair on girls so wont suggest just cutting it. I hope they're allowed to get it cut off if they want though. Some parents are weird about it. My pals eldest girl had to force the issue because they wouldn't let her.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/07/2025 12:49

Get her hair trimmed and forget bobbles for now? If you get it trimmed it will probably look thicker and it will grow quickly. My DD1 had a thick head of hair and that's what we did. She had a lovely bob in no time at all.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/07/2025 12:52

Sorry didn't see you said you would cut it. Maybe hair clips to keep it out her eyes. We used to do a mad looking top pony thing on DD2 a bit like Pebbles from the Flintstones.

Oh yeah, don't worry about that. Cutting hair, getting piercings etc are all allowed when they ask for it themselves.

With my first, she lost most of her hair in the first few months so was quite a bit older when it was as long as this. DD2 hasn't lost much at all.

Respectfully, adhering to a cultural tradition that is uncomfortable for a tiny baby should not happen.

Respectfully, I do not agree that not trimming a babies hair, especially when it is not even in their eyes, is 'uncomfortable for a tiny baby'.

Please keep those kinds of ignorant remarks to yourself instead of offering unsolicited advice where it is not welcome.

My children were like this (all grown up now!). I find it hilarious looking back at old photos and seeing their hair, they look feral!

Harry12345 · 04/07/2025 14:09

Not until I was sure they wouldn’t put it in their mouth

sel2223 · 04/07/2025 14:10

I feel like this has gone a little off track and I need to clarify a couple of things...

My babies hair is sticking straight up and looks a bit wild. It's not covering her eyes and she is not bothered by it at all.

We all love her hair and she gets so many compliments on it but the not cutting it is not an aesthetic issue, it's a cultural thing.

My husband culture does not agree with things like cutting hair or piercings etc until the child asks for it themselves. Others may not agree with those beliefs but we are fine with it and not looking for any debate on the subject.

I understand my baby is still very young. I was just asking what age others had started putting bobbles in their childs hair? I completely take on board everything said about them being a potential choking hazard, sliding right out due to super soft silky hair and causing tenderness to their sensitive scalps. All very valid points....so when are these things no longer such a concern.?
The only thing I've tried at this age are the wide fabric headbands but she pulls them straight down.

Thanks to all those who responded, I appreciate it.

But probably one was about 11/12 months

postmanshere · 04/07/2025 14:13

You can get these soft foam hair ties off Amazon which are great and really gentle on hair.

TY78910 · 04/07/2025 14:17

There is nothing wrong with not cutting your kids hair for cultural reasons, don’t listen to that nonsense. Unless you’re also not brushing the hair and it’s matting and riddled with lice, there is absolutely no harm in your kids having long hair wtf. I didn’t cut DDs by choice because everyone always commented on “hair goals” and I was able to braid it and all sorts. Even now, she only had one trim, a couple of centimetres so she kept the length.

I can’t remember exactly when I put bobbles in, I was to say at the point in which they stayed on. She had the pineapple hair from maybe a year onwards. Just persevere until it stays on!

gamerchick · 04/07/2025 14:46

If it isn't bothering her and it's not in her eyes just leave it alone. It's better not to put hair bands and stuff on them that could get places they shouldn't. It'll get some weight eventually.

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 04/07/2025 16:56

I have a hairy 3 month old! It's not as untamed as yours (amazing hair) but the top goes wild and I've started using bobbles.

I don't have them mega tight, they don't seem to pull her scalp and she doesn't complain. I put them in to go out but take them out for naps if I'm not constantly with her, at bed time or when we're just chilling at home.

Clips I wouldn't do yet as the hair is thin and they'd probably slip out too.

Alternatively a headband could keep it out of her eyes but I find bobbles more practical plus they're so cute!

At what age did you start putting bobbles in baby's hair?
Sprinklesandsprinkles · 04/07/2025 16:58

Ps to say I've submitted a photo which is waiting to ba approved. People saying to cut it are off their rocker, I don't have a culture of not cutting hair and wouldn't dream of cutting it. When their hair is longer it will get more tame!

sel2223 · 04/07/2025 09:24

Thanks everyone, I appreciate everyone's opinions but we definitely won't be cutting it until she asks - luckily its not in her eyes at the moment as just sticks straight up.
This is her big sister age 4.5, she's never had her hair cut and was also born with lots of hair, although not as long as baby number 2 and she lost alot in the first few months.

Beautiful hair!

minnienono · 04/07/2025 17:56

Depends on child, neither of mine had much hair before 2 years old

MarioLink · 04/07/2025 20:11

You need tiny elastics and a special thing that cuts them out at the end of the day. If you want it to be neat then you need a tailcomb and a little spray bottle of water. Do the ponytails loose and vary the partings you use so as not to put strain on the hair. It will be tricky till she can sit-up! One DD needed her hair up at 6 months the other was a very bald baby and didn't need her hair doing till 2 years! I put a tub of bath toys in front of them to play with whilst I quickly did their hair. I would avoid clips until they have grown out of putting things in their mouth. They make soft baby headbands but the must come apart at the back with a velcro fastening for safety and never ever leave them on for sleep or in the car.
