At what age did you start putting bobbles in baby's hair?

Hi Everyone,
So our little one is now 3 and a half months old and was born with a full head of hair which she hasn't lost.
It's getting more unruly by the day but when we've tried hairbands she just pulls at them.
When can you start putting bobbles in their hair?
It's certainly long enough but I wasn't sure about the scalp being too tender.

No advice really but what fantastic hair!

Janeykat · 04/07/2025 09:00

Great hair😍❤️my daughter is 14 months and has similar hair although not really long enough for bobbles yet. We try to use clips to keep the long front bits out of her eyes but she has started pulling them off. So no advice really-- I am going to try a soft hairband next so maybe that?!

DappledThings · 04/07/2025 09:00

I was just using clips early on to keep it out of her eyes. They requested bobbles at nursery as harder for her to pull out so when she started there at 12 months she had bobbles 3 days a week to make funny little sticky up bunches! Outside of that not until it was long enough to plait I don't think. But that only because I preferred clips. Nothing wrong woth bobbles earlier.

My DD is 3 and refuses to have bobbles so I cannot put them. But she did have them at younger age and her cousins have been having them since babies so I don’t think there’s a min age. As long as your DD lets you use them.

BertSymptom · 04/07/2025 09:07

Wow, that’s an impressive head of hair!

I held off putting bobbles or clips in as I was worried they’d be a choking hazard when DD was a baby. It wasn’t really necessary anyway as she didn’t have much hair.

Now DD’s almost two and does need her hair kept out her face she point blank refuses to let us go near her with clips or bobbles. Goes absolutely mad and rips it out immediately. Wish I’d desensitised her to it all when she was too young to resist because now she goes about her business looking feral! Will be watching this thread to see if there’s anyone who knows the answer.

Honestly? I would cut it. It’ll get in her eyes and get tangled and clips and bobbles will irritate her.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/07/2025 09:11

I wouldn’t fuss with bobbles, clubs and hairbands but I'd have it trimmed/cut to make it less unruly and to even it up a bit.

Not a problem most of us had or have with such a young baby. My own dd was a baldie but by about 2, had a beautiful chin length Bob - because I had her hair evened up every time I took DS for a haircut.

Congrats on having a beautiful baby girl.

NotrialNodeal · 04/07/2025 09:11

No don't cut it please! I love her long hair! I would probably use clips to keep it out of her eyes and face 😊

Paaseitjes · 04/07/2025 09:15

I would cut it. Her scalp will be too delicate and I'd worry about her soft skull if she lay on one, plus it will push her to always lie on the same bit so increase the chances of a flat head. She's going to start tugging it very soon, and she'll get mega dribbly in a week or two so her hair will be wet and smelly, which could give her a rash. There's still a chance that it will fall out in the next few weeks so then you might not need to worry.

MintTwirl · 04/07/2025 09:18

I would get it trimmed to tidy it up a bit but wouldn’t use bobbles or clips. She’s getting to the age where she will be putting everything in her mouth so bobbles/clips could be a choking risk.

Seawolves · 04/07/2025 09:23

I used to foster a baby born with very similar hair, I used clips on her when she was awake and took them out for naps.

sel2223 · 04/07/2025 09:24

Thanks everyone, I appreciate everyone's opinions but we definitely won't be cutting it until she asks - luckily its not in her eyes at the moment as just sticks straight up.
This is her big sister age 4.5, she's never had her hair cut and was also born with lots of hair, although not as long as baby number 2 and she lost alot in the first few months.

DD was the same - I never cut her hair. She had her first trim at 4YO. I tried clips and bobbles but the hair is so new and smooth that they don’t stay on long, just slide right off. I promise you it won’t irritate her so just leave it until it grows a bit longer (in literally no time) and you’ll be able to just part it away from the face.

Westfacing · 04/07/2025 09:24

Wow, that's one big head of beautiful hair!

I wouldn't put any bobbles, clips etc - she's too young and her scalp is very tender. You'd have to take them out every time she lies down. I'd also be scared of the potential for it to be a choking hazard.

Yes, this. I’d trim to make it more manageable. I wouldn’t mess around with bobbles, slides or other choking hazards on such a young baby. Great hair, as everyone else said!

DappledThings · 04/07/2025 09:29

I don't get the advice to cut it. If you keep cutting it how will it ever grow enough to be able to be tied back?

She’s 3 months old. I reckon there’s time!

TeflonMom · 04/07/2025 09:35

I wouldn’t cut it. I’d put some coconut oil in it to tame any flyaways and strengthen it

Thank you. We've just started using a little coconut oil.....trying to get the amount right to not make it super greasy looking

Wow, both of your children have beautiful hair! Mine is just 3 months old but is as bald as a baked bean other than two long hairs at the back 😂

depends how the hair grows - if/when some starts falling forwards over the eyes, the OP can trim a bit of a fringe. That’s what worked for my DD.

nocoolnamesleft · 04/07/2025 10:15

Oh that is magnificent hair. Love it. Bobbles pull, and clips are a choking hazard. Hair gel?

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 04/07/2025 10:17

Wow! They both have gorgeous hair!

Well, your older daughter has lovely hair too, but you sound a bit over-invested in not cutting either child’s hair.

Your baby doesn’t have an aesthetic sense, and using hair product or bobbles on a three month old rather than the obvious solution of giving her hair a trim so it doesn’t bother her suggests you have some silly attachment to ‘my daughters have never had their hair cut’ rather than your baby’s comfort.

Hi, thank you for your opinion. It's actually from my husbands culture not to cut hair rather than an aesthetic thing so it's not an option for us.
My post wasn't asking about cutting babies hair. I was just looking for advice about using bobbles and I appreciate all the responses
