Hi everyone,

DD 14mo recently transitioned to 1 nap and sleep was rocky for a while but seems to be setting back down again now. She also just started walking and I think this was throwing her off a bit.

Anyway, we now seem to be stuck on 5.30am wakes because she is knackered by 7.15/30pm and only does a 10 hour night (sadly this has always been her maximum, I am SO jealous of 12 hour night kids haha!!!)

She is generally a pretty good sleeper and will usually go through without waking unless unwell, and takes a solid 2 hour nap around 11.30am most days.

Is there anything I can do about these early wakes? She just can't last until 8pm currently... I hesitate to cut her naptime down as she is miserable when woken up before she is "ready".

Would anyone be able to share their schedule for a similar aged toddler just out of interest?

Thank you!!

Your nap is too early, push it back to 12.30/1.

Mine was still breastfeeding to sleep & waking up frequently in the night at 14 months so what you have sounds amazing!!!!!!
If 5.30am is too early just nudge bedtime later.

My 3rd DC is 14 months. He wakes between 5:30-6am, has a long morning nap from 9-11, and then a shorter afternoon nap at around 2pm.

All 3 of my DC wake/woke at 5:30am. I’m sorry to say that it only seems to stop when they drop all their naps for good. This happened at age 3 for my oldest, and 2.5 for my middle one. I now have to coax oldest out of bed for school every morning, and middle one wakes at around 7am.

I wish I had some advice, but I just learnt to embrace the early rise. We improved our home coffee set up, I have a coffee and journal/scroll my phone for an hour while the baby plays before the other DC wake up. I go to bed early.

Jealous! Mine wakes 5am for day, 30min nap at 8am, big nap 1-3pm, bed 7-7.30 with about 4 wakes over night

Would that be with the intention of it resulting in a later bedtime?

Thanks for the input everyone - I appreciate that her currently sleep is actually pretty good, I'm just surrounded by unicorn babies sleeping 7-7 so this puts things into perspective

Yes, gradually push the nap later and push bedtime later at the same time - hopefully her wake time will follow suit.

Mine were (and are) both 10 hours overnight sleepers - 7 to 7 means someone is properly poorly here - and all you can do is choose the balance of evening time versus early wakes. We went for 8-6, but 8.30-6.30 or 9-7 suits some families better.

Early naps cause early waking in the mornings - push the nap later and you should get a later bed time and later morning wake up.

I would aim for an 8.30pm bedtime, treat anything before 7am as a night waking and nap 1pm-3pm.

Later nap for 2 reasons- firstly, it’ll allow a later bedtime and secondly, because it can cause early waking when it becomes a habit that allows them to make up for the sleep they didn’t get in the early hours. I’d aim
for a nap at 1pm, you may have to gradually inch this forward over a few days/weeks, and then bed at 8pm.

About the same age, wake 6.30am, nap 12-2 (sometimes only actually 1h15 :/ ), bed 7.45-8pm. Couple of night wakes which we soothe with patting and shushing, and encouraging baby to cuddle Teddy for extra comfort.

Quite a recent change for us, we'll see how it beds in...
