Too much Calpol?

I’ve got really confused and given the second dose of Calpol too soon, an hour too soon. Should I worry. It’s for a 4 year old who has an elevated temperature.

How much did you give

missgraciea · 28/06/2025 22:14

I gave 10ml at 6.45pm and then 7.5ml at 10pm. It says 4-6 years 10ml and 2-4 7.5ml so I’m never sure

No he’ll be fine. The guidelines are very conservative for home medications. When kids are hospitalised for viruses and infections etc they’re often given a double strength dose under medical supervision. Edited for clarity!

I wouldn't worry, but don't give anymore now until tomorrow. You could give nurofen instead.

How much does he weigh? He may be able to have more than the bottle says. I always dose mine by weight rather than age as it’s more effective!

Just make sure you give the next dose at least 4h later and no more than 4 doses in 24h.
Setting a 4h timer on your phone when you give a dose can help make sure you don't give it too soon. Although be aware of you are giving Calpol every 4h you will max out the daily amount after 16h so will have to have a gap before giving more.
Alternating Calpol and ibuprofen can help when they are unwell and you are clock watching for the next calpol dose. You can only give 3 Ibuprofen doses in 24h So you do have to be careful with timings.

The dose for 4 year olds is 10ml. It 7.5ml for 2 up to 4 years and 10ml from 4 years up to 6 years

Just make sure you don't exceed the maximum dose in 24 hours. Wait 5 hours before the next dose and dont give more than 4 doses in 24 hours
