Changing a toddler’s nappy on a plane

Hey
I’ve just been on a long haul flight without my darling children and I realised there is no way I could fit my toddler on the tiny changing table in the bathroom on a plane. We are going away with them in a few months- moms, how are we doing it??
TIA

I just did a 10 hour international flight plus layover plus other 5 hours flight.

I bought bulkhead row seats and changed him in the seat, the flight attendant just asked us to throw the nappy in the toilet. Best seats, much more space for the baby to move around.

How utterly disgusting for other passengers, not to mention your child’s dignity. Do better.

Gissah · 28/06/2025 18:28

We have always flown a lot with our kiddos and it's fine.

My eldest was really tall, I either did it standing in the loo or he was OK on the changing table with his legs in the air if necessary. In fact he was easier to change on the flight because he was scared of falling down the loo 😂

There's usually one accessible toilet on the plane which is very slightly bigger.

Hahaha, don't talk what you don know. My whole family was taking the whole row so nobody's else saw anything. Not that it should be of your concern, mind your own business.

That’s pretty yuk for the other passengers

Not really, it's a baby and my whole Family was taking the whole row. I wouldn't change him next to a stranger.

Actually it’s everyone’s business if you are doing it in a shared space, not to mention the smell.

Middletoleft · 02/07/2025 17:19

I hope you had the complete row. I'd not be happy if I was sitting there having to put up with it.

Caspianberg · 02/07/2025 17:33

If needed I have seen people
change with toilet door open. The air steward just held door open and stopped people walking past a few minutes. That way you can stand half in doorway if their legs too long.

but ideally just stand them

If it was a poo nappy the smell would upset other passengers.

It’s not just the visibility, it’s also the smell and the increased risk of germs being spread. Again, whether anyone could see anything or not, changing a nappy in the passenger seating area is disgusting behaviour. I can’t believe you’re trying to justify it.

How do you manage a poo especially if it is a messy one? I’ve never managed a standing up nappy change for poo?

Practice before you go? It’s a useful thing to be able to do!

You’ll probably find cabin pressure means they don’t poo anyway but I would want to feel confident I could deal with it if they did. It’s not as hard as it seems.

And someone else on the next flight then has to sit there after with the germs from your child’s nappy 🤢 Really considerate…

Somuchgoo · 02/07/2025 18:36

Being blunt, you just get on with it.
I recently took my 5-year-old on a flight. She's tiny for her age, what disabilities mean she sometimes needs a pull up. And yes I have to change a poo nappy in those tiny little toilets. If I managed it with a 5-year-old, you'll manage it with the toddler though probably would without breaking a sweat.

@Pinky1256 absolutely disgusting. Although the fact you are justifying it probably means you are one of those people that change their children's dirty nappies on restaurant tables and thinks it's fine too.

Maxorias · 02/07/2025 21:33

MemorableTrenchcoat · 28/06/2025 15:06

That sounds rather disgusting.

It wouldn't be necessary if there were suitable facilities on the plane. I know space is at a premium on a plane but I still struggle to believe they couldn't find an extra 20cm for the bathrooms if they actually wanted to. Blame the company, not the passengers.

I once went on a train that didn't have toilets. At all. The trip was 1h. Luckily my child is a boy and I had an empty water bottle but if I didn't, well... Can't expect a 3yr old to hold it in that long (and yes we had gone to the toilet before boarding, but little kids need to go often).

Grim as fuck. No one else in the cabin wants to smell your kid’s shit.

Get a grip, he's a baby, nobody else smelled it. The people around us were my close family who take care of my baby while I work.

Are you one of those people's who hates babies? That's the only justified to criticise so much changing a baby's nappy on a flight without interrupting anybody which would take like less than a minute.

I wouldn't risk an injury for my baby going to that unsuitable toilet for changing. So I do prefer my baby's safety over your comfort, yes, that's my duty as his mom.

No manners, and no class.

You somehow manage to make this worse with each post. It’s quite the skill.

givingitupok · 03/07/2025 06:42

I've travelled a lot with my child. Under 6 months I changed on the seat. Didn't have strangers next to me and he was fast asleep, so had to make an executive decision to change on the seat. The poo didn't smell bad and I was sure the cabin would be more annoyed at a crying child if I'd have woken him. All other times have changed on the toilet. When they're tiny you can just change on your lap. When they're older you can pop them in pull-ups and get them to stand and bend over when you wipe!

Bitzee · 03/07/2025 07:04

Standing on the lid of the toilet works best. Depending on cabin and aircraft some toilets will be bigger-ask the crew. Also make sure you have taped nappies, not pull ups/nappy pants, so you can put the new one on without needing to do a full bottom half strip.

gattocattivo · 03/07/2025 07:35

What a bizarre conclusion that someone must hate babies just because they don’t want to smell their shit! And being so anxious about injuring a baby while changing them in the toilet?!

get a grip mom

Caspianberg · 03/07/2025 07:48

@Pinky1256 - you know all plane toilets are suitable for changing a baby safely? They all have a pull down changing table. It’s actually fairly big as folds down from above toilet usually

It’s just if it’s a larger child ie op 3+ year old their legs will be hanging off end so less space for adult to stand and change. If your child was at a baby age using bassinet you 100% could fit them safely and change fine.
