Changing a toddler’s nappy on a plane

Hey
I’ve just been on a long haul flight without my darling children and I realised there is no way I could fit my toddler on the tiny changing table in the bathroom on a plane. We are going away with them in a few months- moms, how are we doing it??
TIA

just have them stand up in the toilet while you do it, thats what we do.

Coffeeishot · 28/06/2025 14:31

Yes strip the bottom half off and have them stand.

My DD was tall for her age (still is), I had zero issues. Don’t be like the disgusting family that changed their child’s shitty nappy on the seats, leaving the entire cabin to stink. Do it in the toilets. It isn’t that bad.

Take as little as possible with you into the bathroom so a nappy and some wipes so you are not wrangling a changing bag and the toddler.

PeachPumpkin · 28/06/2025 14:36

I agree, standing up, in the toilet cubicle. You’ll have to figure out what’s easier for you - taking off shoes and socks and trousers and using a pull up or not having to take off clothing, but use normal tab nappies. If you can put on tab nappies with them standing up, I’d say that’s the easier option.

pengwing · 28/06/2025 14:37

Pull ups, so much easier than nappies once they can stand.

Thanks for the tips everyone 👍🏽

Make sure the toilet lid's down before you start, then your toddler can't throw your handbag down the toilet, like my friend's little darling did.

Pinky1256 · 28/06/2025 14:40

I just did a 10 hour international flight plus layover plus other 5 hours flight.

I bought bulkhead row seats and changed him in the seat, the flight attendant just asked us to throw the nappy in the toilet. Best seats, much more space for the baby to move around.

Geranium1984 · 28/06/2025 14:45

I managed it with my 2yo recently. I think she sat/stood for most of it except the wiping part. If it isn't a longhaul ideally change in the airport either side of the flight ... unless there is a poo 💩

That’s pretty yuk for the other passengers

TidyDancer · 28/06/2025 14:58

Yes the standing up and pull ups option seems to be the best I’ve come across. Absolutely not in the seat, people may not say anything but it’s grim and really unfair on everyone else. I’ve seen that on a train before and that was bad enough, let alone on a flight!

I took my 20 month old to Australia. We were delayed so even at our stop in Singapore no time to go to the toilets as we had to rush to get our connection. She stood for one change but I recall changing a messy nappy and just laid the mat across the toilet seat holding her legs up with one hand! Awkward but managed. A changing mat is essential as many countries don’t have changing tables - once in Barcelona at a big museum I had to change my son (not yet walking) on the floor of the toilets and thank god I had a mat.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 28/06/2025 15:17

If I had to change my dd on the seats because of a poo they’d have to evacuate the a plane due to the smell! Her poos are horrific smelling and room clearing 😅

We have her first flight in October. 2.5 hours. I’ll change prior to flight then after. If she poos we’ll go to toilets and I’ll manage.

LimitedBrightSpots · 28/06/2025 15:46

Pack a couple of fabric clothes in a sealed plastic bag to use in case of disaster. If you need to clean a lot of mess, fast, they're better than wet wipes.

How do you manage a poo especially if it is a messy one? I’ve never managed a standing up nappy change for poo?

No differently to a wee, just clean them while they’re stood up, used tissues/wipes in a nappy bag and in the bin.

Grim. I would have complained if I was sat anywhere near you - loudly!

BreakingBroken · 28/06/2025 17:22

Time to toilet train?

PiggyPlumPie · 28/06/2025 17:54

Oh jeez, I've just had flashback to changing my 1 year old in the plane toilet of a tiny plane going from East Mids to Aberdeen. She was on antibiotics and her poos were rancid.

I managed with the door open and the help of a lovely flight attendant. Not helpful to you ofc.

Please don't do this OP.
Nobody else wants to smell a child's dirty nappy.

MrsKypp · 28/06/2025 17:59

Agree with the others who said standing up in the toilet.

@Pinky1256 That is disgusting. Very selfish.
