How to get him to ask?

Currently 2.5 weeks into potty training ds. He's doing really well and is happy to use the potty and toilet for pees, bit more anxious about doing poos but we've made a little progress with that and i can see his confidence growing with it.

The thing is he will rarely ever ask off his own bat to use the potty/toilet. He's done it a few times and he's stopped me from reading to him before to tell me me needed to pee so I know he knows what the feeling is. But I think he just doesn't want to stop what he's doing to go especially if he's watching something or is really invested in playing with something. I leave it about an hour/ hour and a half and then I'll ask him if he has a pee or poo feeling and usually he'll say yes and go to the potty, but he's not often volunteering it himself? Is this okay or should I be holding off longer until he wets himself?

He's never been too bothered about a wet or dirty nappy before the way my friends kids would be and doesn't seem to be overly bothered about wet trousers/ poo in pants unless its a big enough pee to make a puddle on the floor at which point he will come and tell me and be very sorry about the puddle even though I've explained accidents are just part of learning. He'd waddle about with a poo in his pants and deny it's existence for as long as he could get away with but I think that's down to feeling like getting cleaned and changed from a poo is a hassle when he wants to keep playing.

First child so guess I'm just trying to figure out if he's on track.

Nooo don't let him wet himself, he's still learning and at the moment needs the support. He's doing fine, self initiating often comes much later.

Take the nappy off. My son hated wet socks.

He has no nappy on, he's wearing proper pants which he's very excited about. He only wears pull ups at night or if I think he's going to fall asleep in the car on a long journey (if I think he'll stay awake he keeps the pants on and we just take pee breaks in a carry potty).

Thanks that's good to know, he's been doing OK just still quite hit and miss though I know for some kids that can take a while. I just wanted to check I'm on the right lines!
