Baby drank bath water

I have a toddler and a baby. Long story short...my 15 week old drank a tiny bit of dirty bath water.

A bit of info on the 'dirt' - my toddler loves to throw all the bottles (shampoo and bodywash) into the bath and she does this every evening. My baby uses her own special body wash and I have two bottles. As I am sharing a bath with my baby, I realise my usual bottle is empty so grab the 'new' bottle and pour it out on my hand. Turns out the 'new' bottle has been thrown into the bath so much it had white floaty bits in and was cold from filling up with dirty bath water every time my toddler threw it in - must have been open at some point. This was now in the bath I was sharing with baby. Stale dirty water from multiple baths.

In my shock I look up and my baby has a tiny bit of bath water go in her mouth. I'm so upset and then actually look at the water we are in and there is fluff and a hairs floating around. I called my partner up to complain that he hasn't done a good job cleaning the bath to find out he thought I had been cleaning the bath - we have figured out the last time it was properly cleaned was probs over a month ago. He had been cleaning toilets and shower but for some reason left the bath to me.

Safe to say that since this, I've put on the marigolds and cleaned it top to bottom but now terrified my newborn will get ill. A mix of an over-anxious mind and guilt for missing the cleaning of bath has made me feel like a really crappy mum.

Any reasurence much appeciated!

Be fine

RoosterPotato · 24/05/2025 19:01

They’ll be fine. Once they’re crawling they’ll be licking the floor

MadMaxHasSandInHisCrack · 24/05/2025 19:02

Yeah they love that

Zero issues. They'll be drinking out of puddles soon.

DappledThings · 24/05/2025 19:02

All kids drink the bathwater don't they? This is really a non-incident

GildedRage · 24/05/2025 19:02

yes babies drink bath water mostly accidentally.

fivetriangulartrees · 24/05/2025 19:02

It's absolutely disgusting but in my experience completely to be expected. DS1 drank so much bath water as a baby. Then there was his horrible toddler phase when he refused to drink water or milk all day and would then guzzle down filthy, soapy bath gunk with glee. I don't know how he wasn't ill, but he was fine.

ninjahamster · 24/05/2025 19:03

Oh they’ll be fine! Mine ate a snail at 6m when she was crawling. It builds immunity 😂

NightsinthegardensofSpain · 24/05/2025 19:04

Don't worry

This. My 6m old has been sucking the flannel as long as she has been able to hold it, whilst in the bath with 3yo sister who’s been at nursery all day 🤷‍♀️

bloodredfeaturewall · 24/05/2025 19:10

second children are exposed to dirt earlier than first.
she'l be fine

Ihatemondays1962 · 24/05/2025 19:12

It wouldn't even cross my mind to worry about this.

marshmallowfinder · 24/05/2025 19:14

It's a total non-event. Happens all the time.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 24/05/2025 19:14

🤣 🤣🤣

Please please chill out and laugh at this because it is quite funny.

Are you honestly really upset because of the bath water and uncleaned bath?
Have all the answers and replies on here reassured you?

Superscientist · 24/05/2025 19:35

My daughter ate moss from a drain at about 6 months old
Completely fine. Amusing story nothing more

Justtryingmybestest · 24/05/2025 19:57

Very reassured. Thank you everyone

Babies have this thing called an immune system, it works very well and even if your baby gets a little upset tummy, this will be good for building up immunity which your child actually needs.

heldinadream · 24/05/2025 20:06

I knew a kid used to sit quietly behind the full length curtains until his ma discovered he was merrily eating wood lice by the mitt full.
Next time I went round she'd hacked two feet off the curtains. 😂

SunshineIdiot789 · 24/05/2025 20:13

It'll be totally fine.

@heldinadream Apparently I used to scratch the wall and eat the paint coming off. My mum found lots of tiny holes on the wall in my room and didn't know what it was until she caught me doing it

MarioLink · 24/05/2025 20:21

I'm struggling to see how a baby would get to 15 weeks without getting a bit of bath water in their mouth. Mine did water Babies abd were encouraged to splash water over their faces in the pool and the bath, plus dunk them in the pool. Plus as someone above pointed out they put the sponges and flannels to their mouths.
