Baby’s head and sleeping bags !

Strange issue, advice needed!
I kept all DD’s sleeping bags in every size, DS is currently 8 months old and getting far too tall for the 0-6 month ones, I can only just zip them up. But his head is far too small for the 6-18 month ones even with the poppers done up under the arms, you can still easily pull the whole thing over his head.
he doesn’t have an unusually small head, its average but DD had a 98th centile head so sleeping bags always fit her!
I have the Jojo maman ones but I don’t want to blindly buy different brands as they are quite expensive items and I don’t know that different brands would be any better. It’s a long shot I know, but anyone know brands that might fit if they had a small headed baby??

Don’t use one? At 8 months old it’s not a vital bit of kit. Can’t he just sleep under a blanket or similar? These bags aren’t really needed in the summer are they?

Gissah · 22/05/2025 19:16

I found the best ones for long slim babies are the mamas & papas ones and John Lewis - neither of mine have big heads either I don't think 😂! X

We used a quilted sleep suit rather than a sleeping bag for a long time for one of my DC, that could work better for your baby. It was similar to the one attached

Sorry but when did sleeping bags become a thing when my 4 were babies we just used a vest and babygrow with cellular blankets.

Where2GoNext · 22/05/2025 19:24

They've been around at least a decade! My LO's would kick blankets off and then wake up cold. Sleeping bags keep them comfortable 🤷🏻‍♀️

WonderingWanda · 22/05/2025 19:26

@Iloveeverycat I used them 15 years ago so they've been around a while.

SovietSpy · 22/05/2025 19:52

The problem with the Jojo ones is they cover such a large age range. A 6 month old baby is going to be very small in bag that can fit up to 18 months.
we found the sleeping bags from Tu or Tesco to be fine. They do 6-12 months so the fit is better.
buy a couple on Vinted if you don’t want to spend loads. He’ll fit the Jojo ones eventually, I just wouldn’t take any risks in the short term.

OtterMummy2024 · 22/05/2025 19:54

I thought sleeping bags were a fad until a friend gave us one to try, and it massively improved my baby's sleep - no kicking the blanket off and waking up cold multiple times a night.

OP M&S ones seem to have poppers at older ages than some brands, and Tesco do a 6-12 month size which might be better than a 6-18 month size?

DisneVillainsAreBetter · 22/05/2025 19:58

Thank you to those with actual advice.

Sleeping bags are very wisely used as they are a hell of a lot safer than blankets they can wrap themselves up in. Blankets are also useless for a baby who moves and kicks.

Gosh! How did we manage babies 25 years ago!? Cold? Mine were not cold and didn’t kick all night. They slept! The power of marketing.

🙄

Times change. New products and ideas come out. Hardly groundbreaking stuff is it.

Nonametonight · 23/05/2025 21:16

What's with all the hate for sleeping bags? If I was using blankets I'd still have had to buy baby blankets. The sleeping bags are more comfortable for the baby and easier to wash

TizerorFizz · 23/05/2025 21:16

No. Marketing still works though - emperor's new clothes.

QueenOfWeeds · 23/05/2025 21:20

I found the John Lewis ones far too big around the neck at this stage. DD1 used the Mori ones (£££ but fitted her well) or a togged sleepsuit from Tu whilst between sizes. I think I even had a thread about it at the time!

HerNameIsDebbie · 23/05/2025 21:23

The ones with the legs in were a godsend with my little wriggly kids. Got them from jojo.

WannabeMathematician · 23/05/2025 21:31

I agree with @SovietSpy thats a huge age range! Lots of super markets have the age range in 6 months blocks or smaller so it’s worth looking around.

Also not understanding the hate for the sleeping bags! My DS would wriggle all over the cot in his sleep, keeping a blanket on him would have been a nightmare.

NewUserIDRequired · 23/05/2025 21:36

Ive used cellular blankets and sleepsacks. Team sleepsack all the way.

My two low centile DDs have both used the John Lewis own brand sleep bags and I never noticed the head hole being too large for them. They are also 6-18m in range though so you might have the same issue. Maybe see if there are any on sale / on vinted if you dont want to risk spending on something that might not work for your DS?

SunshineIdiot789 · 23/05/2025 21:42

The hate for sleeping bags here is hilarious. Literally every parent i know uses them. Hell, I look at it and think I'd love one for myself too.

Seriously, fuck blankets. They're not safe at 8 months, and they kick them off and wake up cold. Mine rolls around all night, if you look at the baby monitor it's a party in his crib all night long.

Technically mine one could go over my baby's head but it's never occurred to me to worried about it. He's 9 months and it's never been a problem. I got the Halo 0.5 tog.

not everyone can be a wonderful mother as you clearly were

I like the sleeping bags as we had cellular blankets, but they always kick them off and are half frozen when you go to them. Even when the room isn’t too cold.
