What does everyone do about dressing kids for school. If we get dressed before breakfast and playtime they’ll get messy but we’re on time but if we leave getting dressed til last we have tantrums and we late 90% of the time

Why do they get messy? How old are they?

IsThisLifeNow · 22/05/2025 08:19

We do after, 6 and 3. Like you say, they get messy from milk drips and toasty fingers getting wiped on clothes

DongDingBell · 22/05/2025 08:39

We always did clothes after breakfast.
Both a secondary now. DS1 gets dressed before coming downstairs. DS2 has breakfast in PJs. I'm well past being required to get them dressed!

After, because he always drops something down him if he's in his uniform.

JellyAnd · 22/05/2025 08:57

My 8YO wants privacy for changing and can manage not to get toast all over herself so she gets dressed before in her room then comes downstairs. That’s pretty new though! Any younger than 7 and I’d always do afterwards.

HairsprayBabe · 22/05/2025 09:11

Mine are just 3 and 4.5 they get dressed first thing, they do not get messy with breakfast, but we have always done it this way so it may be they are just used to it. They also get themselves dressed, I only have to help with the odd button or shoe.

We do cereal, yogurt and fruit for breakfast if that makes any difference.

You could always do dressed save for school jumper then if there are any spots or spills the school jumper will cover any minor mishaps.

notacooldad · 22/05/2025 09:15

Breakfast then out of pjs.
Why are they having tantrums.
Do they have distractions such as the tv being on?
It was quite regimented in our house. Up breakfast, teeth dressed out. No tv, no games etc. Any tantrums would have a consequences. Eg loss of game time softer school.

andtheworldrollson · 22/05/2025 09:17

Breakfast, get dressed then playtime

or get dressed , large apron /pinny and then breakfast

IwantmyReptv · 22/05/2025 09:18

After. Even I get dressed after so I can be cosy over breakfast and not worry about any splashes.

kiwiblue · 22/05/2025 09:21

So if you get dressed after because they drop food down their pyjamas, do you wash their pyjamas every day? I get them dressed before for this reason, so just wondering!

Ihaveoflate · 22/05/2025 09:22

Before.

We don't go downstairs until we're all washed and dressed on a school/work day because we just don't have the time to corral my incredibly laid back child up and down the stairs.

NuffSaidSam · 22/05/2025 10:53

We do a bit of both sleeping on what time they wake up.

In your situation I'd do breakfast and then get dressed and then play time. If they mess about/tantrum getting dressed then there'll be no time for play. Don't leave getting dressed until the last minute.

GroovyChick87 · 22/05/2025 10:56

Breakfast first thing, then dressed. Two of them shower also. If they get dressed first, they will inevitably be going to school with stains on their uniforms ( other than my eldest).

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 22/05/2025 10:57

She's always been dressed/hair done before breakfast.

I do. Wouldn't occur to me not to. Household of 6, sometimes 7, I do a lot of washing anyway so may as well throw them in with the wash.

OMGitsnotgood · 22/05/2025 11:10

Mine used to put their dressing gowns on top of their uniform (minus jumper/sweatshirt) any spills could be sponged off and would be dry before needed again.

turkeyboots · 22/05/2025 11:12

Depends how messy they are. We did breakfast first when DC were little. By age 6 or 7, it was clothes first. And as teenagers it's definitely clothes first otherwise they'd just go back to bed!

MarioLink · 22/05/2025 11:14

We've done both. I prefer dressing first but it's pointless if you have to change them when they've got Marmite down their school uniform.

MarioLink · 22/05/2025 11:16

Yes we had daily PJs when they were very messy. Better than double the school uniform. It's fine now, they wear PJs multiple nights and rarely get food on the uniform.

hellotomrw · 22/05/2025 11:17

After why add the stress of keeping them tidy lol I have a 2 y/o and 5 y/o.

MiddleAgedDread · 22/05/2025 11:19

I don't get dressed for work myself before breakfast so wouldn't do it with a small child! That said, I grew out on tantrums 40 years ago

LeedsZebra90 · 22/05/2025 11:24

After, unless we're running late. Breakfast is a chilled out affair at ours. they get up at half 6/7 and we don't leave till 8.15 so plenty of time for getting ready.

Londonmummy66 · 22/05/2025 11:28

Mine are long past that stage but it was always breakfast in PJs. We then cleaned teeth and washed hands and faces at the kitchen sink and then got dressed in the sitting room. PJs went in the laundry room. The incentive was that if they got dressed quickly there'd be time for a 5 minute cartoon during hairbrushing before we needed to leave. (TV not put on until they were both ready)

Mummyslittlegiraffe · 22/05/2025 12:40

We do after on week days, before (more chilled) at weekends. DD4 takes a while to warm up to eating, so this works better for her. Use an apron for spills if needed.
We also have a strict no play/ipad until dressed, breakfast, teeth and ready for school.

SquigglePigs · 22/05/2025 13:04

DD is 6 and she usually gets dressed before she has breakfast. Occasionally she’ll decide she’s starving and needs breakfast first so we swap it round.
