What does everyone do about dressing kids for school. If we get dressed before breakfast and playtime they’ll get messy but we’re on time but if we leave getting dressed til last we have tantrums and we late 90% of the time
help

Breakfast then out of pjs.
Why are they having tantrums.
Do they have distractions such as the tv being on?
It was quite regimented in our house. Up breakfast, teeth dressed out. No tv, no games etc. Any tantrums would have a consequences. Eg loss of game time softer school.

🏅for being the best parent ever. And to do it all by yourself every morning too!

Breakfast is last for our 5 year old as it was getting impossible to get him to get dressed, and we can send him to school without breakfast but not without getting dressed.
For our 2 year old it's more free form, usually breakfast first as he is food obsessed at the moment!

Before.

We don't go downstairs until we're all washed and dressed on a school/work day because we just don't have the time to corral my incredibly laid back child up and down the stairs.

Same!

Children are almost 2 and almost 4. Little one wears a bib, but probably has to have a post-breakfast outfit change once a month.

Mine are 9 and 10 amd would still get messy. But they dress first. They have non messy things for breakfast such as toast , croissant, fruit.

IsThisLifeNow · 22/05/2025 08:19

We do after, 6 and 3. Like you say, they get messy from milk drips and toasty fingers getting wiped on clothes

Exactly this, mine is 5 and just... Messy! He also always goes for a poo after breakfast/before we leave so we just have his uniform in the bathroom and he puts it on right before we go.

SErunner · 22/05/2025 16:25

Get dressed before. Teeth and hair after. She’s 3 and doesn’t really get messy. Getting dressed after always results in us being late too. Lesser of the two evils to wipe a spot of milk or a few crumbs off a top!

Whiteflowerscreed · 22/05/2025 16:26

Always have breakfast in pjs in our house

mathanxiety · 22/05/2025 16:34

Dress, breakfast, brush teeth, out the door was how I did it.

Anyone prone to mess wore a smock or child sized apron, or ate toast.

How old are your kids and why is mess a factor in your planning?

SapatSea · 22/05/2025 16:37

Dressed first since that is what seems to work for you. Get some bibs, coveralls or just peg or tuck clean tea towels around their necks to catch food an wipe their hands and mouths on but protect their clothes. If you are running really late they can always eat on the go (toast, bagel, apple etc) but dressing is another matter.

cottaterra · 22/05/2025 16:51

Before. And buy a massive pinny for them to wear for breakfast!

CMRE · 22/05/2025 17:06

It’s all in the organisation!! Mine go down in their PJs to have breakfast in front of some cartoons and while they eat I get myself dressed and sorted and lay their clothes out ready; then they come up, brush teeth get dressed and we go. But I have it down to a fine tuned art these days!!

I do prefer clothes after breakfast though, no one needs a milk drip right before you leave!

doodleschnoodle · 22/05/2025 17:10

Before, because if you do it after they lose motivation to get dressed at all and it makes it much more of a nagging process. Whereas this way I don’t have to nag at all, they get up and both get dressed without prompting (almost 3yo and 6yo) because no breakfast till they do! If it’s something messy they wear a coverall thing like for painting. This way has made mornings much more smooth!

After breakfast and teeth brushing

9yo & almost 7yo get changed after breakfast to enable me to wash their breakfasty faces & apply suncream more easily. They tend to run around in just underwear until just before we have to leave the house.

my 5 year old has always been very difficult with when I’m asking or even demanding to get things done. It’s like he sees it as oh you want that done well now I’m going to run laps of the house climb on things ect. It’s always been the same. We have no tvs or tablets to distract because it makes it worse

So if you get dressed after because they drop food down their pyjamas, do you wash their pyjamas every day? I get them dressed before for this reason, so just wondering!

Yeah, even if they don’t get the pjs messy everyone’s pjs and daytime clothes from that day go in the wash…..we have one to two washes on a day

Mine used to put their dressing gowns on top of their uniform (minus jumper/sweatshirt) any spills could be sponged off and would be dry before needed again.

Oh my god! This is genius, we have them pullover dressing gowns that we could use! Sorry for all the !!!! I’m just so delighted that this may help a million thank you!

Kids get dressed before breakfast. If they spill breakfast down themselves then 🤷 they have to go to school like that. They learnt pretty young to not make a mess at breakfast

Whyx · 22/05/2025 20:44

I've only just managed to get my two 5 and 3 ok with getting dressed before breakfast and it is such a massive help. The youngest can be a bit messy but it's very quick to change his top when everything else is already done and he's only really that mucky on occasion. Mostly a dust off and maybe a wee sponge if absolutely necessary. I know how some people feel about it but at nursery they come back black from dirt so I figure as long I send them cleaner than they come back we're winning!

MarioLink · 22/05/2025 11:16

Yes we had daily PJs when they were very messy. Better than double the school uniform. It's fine now, they wear PJs multiple nights and rarely get food on the uniform.

Yeah we have daily pjs but I also have a uniform or tracksuit for each day of school lol

I know what you mean though. Sometimes you have to just do what works. A reward can help. If they're fed and dressed in time they can ride their bikes in the drive for ten mins before we go etc. helps with the transition to outside too.

Mine are just 3 and 4.5 they get dressed first thing, they do not get messy with breakfast, but we have always done it this way so it may be they are just used to it. They also get themselves dressed, I only have to help with the odd button or shoe.

We do cereal, yogurt and fruit for breakfast if that makes any difference.

You could always do dressed save for school jumper then if there are any spots or spills the school jumper will cover any minor mishaps.

christ my 3 year old cannot even put his pants back on yet

It’s a personality thing I think too. My 6yo would happily have me dress her still but my nearly 3yo won’t let me, she has to do it all herself! So she quite often has stuff on back to front Grin She’s very stubborn and independent. DD1 is much more placid and chilled.
