hey everyone, just wondering if anyone has any advice about separation. my partner and i are separating and i will be moving to a flat nearby, but our eldest is just about to start primary school (september). would it be best to wait until he has settled in there before we separate or is it better to do it now (june or july)? i think starting primary school is already a big thing for him so thought it might be best to wait a few more months... my partner and i are not constantly fighting or anything, it's not a terrible atmosphere at home, but not very loving, so i think waiting could work...

If your child is 4, the 4 months between now and starting school is big percentage of their life. A week is a long time at their age.

If you're going to do it, do it now.
It'll be normal by September.
Don't disrupt their start into school

I agree with PP. Have them start school with arrangements in place that won't change. It will be harder to start school and settle then have everything change. Good luck it's a horrible time.

It would also be good to highlight to the new school on the receptions starters paperwork that there’s a recent separation so they can be aware and support dc.

thanks everyone, your advice was really helpful and meant we didn't put off the separation for longer than necessary. it's gone well and it's already normal for them so i am really grateful for your advice, it made a real difference to our lives, thank you!
