What would you say if your 3 year old dd said 'she had fat arms'

She just came out with it when i was getting her dressed.
She isn't at all fat, she is very slight.
I just said don't be silly but then she grabbed her skin on her upper arms and said look.
I didn't really know how to handle it. DP said she has probably seen something on tv.
Should i be worried or is it just one of them bizarre things a 3 year old says ?

I think it's probably pretty random. Tell her she's gorgeous tomorrow and stop worrying. Kids say lots of odd things.

Much worse would be if she said: 'mummy your arms are fat!'

I would just tell her that the extra skin is for her to grow into. If you are really concerned, show her some baby photos so she can see her size then and now and maybe she can imagine how she will grow bigger.

I wouldn't really be concerned at the moment though as she has only ever said it once. If she continued to say it and went off her food or something, thats when I would become concerned.

woudn't mind that it's more the 'mummy you have a fat bum' that gets me

I would make a joke out of it and say that she has to have that bit there or her arms would burst when she stretched them or something. I say that to DS2. He said he was "too fat" the other day (he's 4) and I tried to make light of it. I don[t want to make a big issue out of it - we have enough of those round the table as it is

FrannyandZooey · 19/05/2008 21:59

I would say "mmm, aren't they lovely, so soft and beautiful" or similar
ds sometimes shows me his 'fat tummy' after he has eaten a lot
we all admire it

It worries me that my 6 year old thinks her legs are too fat, because her friend's are thinner than hers. Luckily she still eats properly, but it does show how young girls start to worry about their appearance and compare themselves to others.

Thanks for the help will just make light of it next time and hope it doesn't become an issue !
