Help with clothing please!

Hello, I am going to be a first time mum in October and feel a bit clueless with what to buy baby in terms of clothing.
I've heard the terms babygros, sleepsuits, vests but am getting a bit confused! How many of each do I need for newborn size? What are they all used for e.g. sleeping/ daytime/ going out? Can the baby stay in babygros or do I need actual outfits as well? Or can outfits come when they are older?

Thank you for any advice!! :) x

People will have lots of firm opinions but it's really up to you what you dress them in whether that's outfits or not. When you're changing clothes multiple times a day due to nappy leaks, sick, milk spills etc you may not really care or have much choice about what to put them in next. What's clean will do.

Sleepsuits usually have feet, babygros are the same thing, both usually long sleeved. Vests usually don't have legs, and might have no sleeves, short sleeves or long sleeves. Romper suits are like sleepsuits but with no feet.

I used to dress baby in a vest and sleepsuit all the time when they were newborn. Once able to be a bit more mobile, then romper suits in the day time, or vest, trousers, top.

Don't buy lots of any of them at the moment. "Newborn" size might not fit a tiny baby, nor a big baby. One of mine was too big and long for Newborn size and went straight into 0-3 months. Every supermarket has lots of basic multipacks that you can get when you know what size you need.

Also, maybe try posting this in the Parenting section? There's also a due in October 2025 thread you could join and ask there as well.
