Upper age bracket you would consider final baby

I had my first at just turned 33 and my second at 35.(Which for my area is surprisingly on the younger side).
I know it's super personal and situation-dependent but I'd like to know based on these ages, what's the oldest you would leave it to potentially try for a 3rd?
Also interested to know what you think the average age for people to be having kids (especially in London/Greater London) is.

My limit was 40.

autumn1610 · 03/05/2025 17:17

Early 40’s I would think for me seeing as I’m 37 and no child so I would like to try till around then

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 03/05/2025 17:17

I always said 40, then I had 4 miscarriages so it was really when we could get to 2 without having an impact on the oldest. We didn’t put an age on it, rather that another miscarriage was probably our limit.

As it was, I was almost 42 when child 2 was born. She’s amazing.

I’m 35 and still on the fence about having a baby (unbelievably…). If I decide to go down the baby route, I think early-mid 40s would be my cut-off.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 03/05/2025 17:25

Pregnant at 40, birthing that child at 41 would be my limit, I think.

I’m in central London and the average age of my friends having their first is probably 36-37

SpringtimeinBR · 03/05/2025 17:36

40 would be my limit for a third. I'm 37 now and already have a 1 and 3 year old - I'm tired!

If it was my first, I reckon 42.

**Edited to say - we are trying for a third now, and actually if I could fit in a fourth by 40 I would!

MsCactus · 03/05/2025 17:38

I'm in central London and all the mums at my NCT were age around 37-40 first time mums.

Interested in this thread though, as had my first at 30 and had my second at 33... And my second pregnancy was ROUGH, I'd like to have a big age gap for the third to let my body recover if that's possible.

The latest I'd go for is probably 40, but I guess would TTC from 37

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 03/05/2025 17:38

35

Nevertrustacop · 03/05/2025 17:42

38 or 39

ChilliHeeler09 · 03/05/2025 17:49

I had my second in February and I'm 35. We want a 3rd, so we're going to start trying in January next year. We're planning to give it 12 months, and if we haven't conceived by then, we're calling it a day and sticking at 2. For me personally, it is less about my age, and more about the age difference between my kids. My kids will be 3 and a half and 11 months by January next year and I don't want a bigger gap between the 2 of them and a 3rd. I'll be 36 by then, so 37 by the time potential baby number 3 comes along.

coxesorangepippin · 03/05/2025 17:53

I'd say 40

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/05/2025 17:57

Our limit was DC2 starting school. Which meant I was 30!

I do admire the ones just starting with kids at my current age (39)...I wouldn't have the energy!

Gossyboo · 03/05/2025 17:58

Hard stop at 36 for me. I had my oldest at 27 so that's the main reason. If I had no children, I'd probably keep trying until mid forties.

Kelse789 · 03/05/2025 17:59

30! I know that seems young compared to the other answers but I personally wanted to be done with pregnancy and childbirth by 30 at the latest. I have friends whose limit is 44/45 (ivf).

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/05/2025 18:00

37 so that I wouldn’t have a toddler in my forty’s - but then I have children. It I had none maybe I’d feel different.

Viviennemary · 03/05/2025 18:01

I think 40 would be absolutely late enough.

Biscuitsneeded · 03/05/2025 18:06

I would say mid-late thirties. I had a few friends who popped out babies with no trouble conceiving at 40 and 42, and I used to think they had just as much energy as me, but now that our kids are young adults or nearing that, and the friends are 60ish, several of them have major health issues and one has sadly died, leaving teens.Sorry to be gloomy, but it's not just about whether you can cope with babies and toddlers in your 40s, it's also that you just don't know how you will be when you're 60 and dealing with A levels, teen dramas etc, even without major illness.

LilDeVille · 03/05/2025 18:09

35 for me, so not very helpful in your case! I had my eldest when I was 25 so that would be a 10 year gap. As it is I had my third at 32. DEFINITELY in the minority, being neither a teen mum nor an ‘older’ mum in London/Surrey.

Fourteenandahalf · 03/05/2025 18:09

34

ToKittyornottoKitty · 03/05/2025 18:12

I’m 35 and absolutely too old for me. But I did have mine at 25 and 27 so the toddler years are long behind me. I’m sure if I’d started later my max age would be later

ParentPerson · 03/05/2025 18:13

35
Pregnant with my third at 34, if it hadn’t have happened would’ve been a hard stop at 35.
Too many risks having a baby when older in my personal opinion, but understand others different choices completely.

Fundays12 · 03/05/2025 18:15

I had my youngest just after I turned 38. I would not have anymore as that was the latest I would have had any.

Gundogday · 03/05/2025 18:16

35 for me. Had my two dc at 30 and 32.

MilesOfMotivation · 03/05/2025 18:16

Had my last at 40. Not really what I ever wanted but life - got married for a second time and we wanted a child together.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 03/05/2025 18:18

I had my last baby at 42.5
