Upper age bracket you would consider final baby

I had my first at just turned 33 and my second at 35.(Which for my area is surprisingly on the younger side).
I know it's super personal and situation-dependent but I'd like to know based on these ages, what's the oldest you would leave it to potentially try for a 3rd?
Also interested to know what you think the average age for people to be having kids (especially in London/Greater London) is.

It’s completely personal, and not really a question people who don’t know you, your situation or capabilities can answer.

I was 25 when I had my first, 31 when I had my second and 42 when I had my 3rd.

All completely different pregnancies, all completely different babies.

However, I’ve had 3 sections due to a retroverted uterus…and recovery was slightly longer at 42…although I was healthier and happier with my 3rd pregnancy and I knew what to expect !!!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/05/2025 18:58

32 for me personally
in general I’d say 38

DramaAlpaca · 03/05/2025 19:00

My own personal cut off was 35. As it happened, I had my third and last at 33.

I had my first 2 children at the same ages as you OP. I had my 3rd 2 weeks before my 39th birthday. I'm reasonably fit but I personally wouldn't have wanted to be pregnant in my 40s.

Also, our youngest is now 16 and I'm 55 which tbh feels like the top end of dealing with a sometimes stroppy, hormonal teenager when I can be feeling quite hormonal myself 😂

Ladamesansmerci · 03/05/2025 19:10

Had my first at 30 and she's nearly a year old. I'd like to start trying for another at 33. I'd personally like to be done by around 36.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/05/2025 19:38

I had my second just before I turned 40 and the pregnancy was an awful lot more tiring and achy than my previous one 4 years before.

I conceived first cycle at 39, if I hadn’t I wonder if I’d have lost my nerve within a couple of months but he’s bloody brilliant so I’m glad we didn’t and the newborn phase and everything since has been grand but the third trimester was fucking exhausting.

glestena · 03/05/2025 19:40

I had my 3rd at age 42. But I had my 2nd at age 38. If I'd had dcs at 33 and 35 like you, I'd probably want to have a 3rd by 39, which would be more about age gaps than being an older mum. I'm 45 with a 3yo and I don't feel tired at all, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Aozora13 · 03/05/2025 19:53

I had my DC at 35, 37 and 40. My cut off for DC3 was 40-ish, partly due to my age and partly due to the age gap/wanting to get the sleepless bit over and done with. Having said that, I don’t know if I’d actually stop trying at a particular age. And if I didn’t have DC I think 42 would have been my limit, although that’s when I started HRT so possibly wishful thinking…

glasspeach · 03/05/2025 19:54

Mine was 40, stretched to trying to 41. Told we were too old, forgot about it, last baby arrived just before my 43rd birthday. Alls good so far as parents in our 50’s with uni kids and our little one!

carly2803 · 03/05/2025 19:55

35 is my limit (and im way passed that!)

I think those into their 40s having babies do not realise in your 50s you have need primary school children and then almost 60 with teens! no thanks!!

Nickisli1 · 03/05/2025 19:56

42-43, though it will depend on fertility levels at this age

Overthebow · 03/05/2025 19:56

For me it was 35. As you say it’s personal for everyone, but for me I didn’t want the higher risks of being over 35 and I also want to be able to retire early and not have the financial pressure of university at that time, and want to be able to enjoy grandchildren and not be too old (if DCs have children which of course they may not).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/05/2025 19:57

My limit was 40.
After a horrible first pregnancy at 37, I had my second child 3 weeks before my 41st birthday.

stargirl1701 · 03/05/2025 19:57

My limit was 45.

I was pregnant at 34, DD1 was 36, DD2 was 38 and pregnant again at 42. All conceived first month of trying!

Girlof6 · 03/05/2025 19:58

My limit was 35. I had my last at 33.

SaveTheRave · 03/05/2025 19:59

I had 1st at 34, 2nd at 36, 3rd at 38. Wouldn’t have wanted to be older than 38 for a third/last baby as I’m absolutely knackered, but if it’s the first or only I could probably have gone to about 40

Glitterballofdreams · 03/05/2025 19:59

35 was my cut off, and I fell pregnant with my third at 35!

Do you honestly think women having babies in their 40s have not considered this? Who on earth are you mixing with?

Lighttodark · 03/05/2025 20:01

35, having had two by 32. Reasoning is late 30s/early 40s can be the start of perimenopause and it sounds brutal coping with that alongside bad sleep, demanding toddlers etc

starrynight009 · 03/05/2025 20:02

41/42

And I say this as someone who is now 44 so I'm not speculating. I had my daughter at 38, conceived easily, good pregnancy and I'm having the time of my life being a mum. But I did want a second. Unfortunately life circumstances meant I couldn't try again quickly then, once I hit 41/42, I just knew I personally didn't want to do it all again in my 40s so I changed my mind.

Whippetlovely · 03/05/2025 20:03

35

notacooldad · 03/05/2025 20:03

My cut off was 35

summerscomingsoon · 03/05/2025 20:04

40max. I hadmine at 35 and now 50. He's 16 nearly and it's tiring. Teen years not fun. I don't think it's even the sleepless nights for babies .

Think seriously about if you want to be parenting teens when yiu could be retiring.

I work in the civil service looking to maybe retire between 55 and 60 . Realistically that wonr happen till ds is past university age and independent so at least another 7 years off.

If you have a baby at 45 you're looking at mid yo late 60s till they are independent. Affects your retirement etc

VivIsBlonde · 03/05/2025 20:04

Had my first at 22, had my last at 30, it was definitely easier having them younger than at 30!
