Postnatal insomnia help!

Past 3 nights I just haven't slept, even though my 4 month has done 5-7 hour stints. I feeling really tearful and anxious. From tomorrow my husband is working away on and off for the next few weeks. I will go to stay with my parents in law next week but prior to that I am so scared of how I will cope if I don't sleep soon. From his birth I have been out like a light pretty much as soon as we get him down to sleep. Please tell me it gets better. I will go to the GP tomorrow but in the meantime I am having a meltdown prompting internet forum posting.

Is your husband able to take over for one night so you could take a sleeping pill and hopefully get some sleep? I had awful post-natal insomnia a bit earlier than that and that was the only thing that helped. I wasn’t breastfeeding by then otherwise both the sleeping pill and husband taking over couldn’t have happened. I took Promethazine which is actually available over the counter and worked better than a sleeping pill that the doctor prescribed. Melatonin might also help you fall asleep and wouldn’t make you groggy if you need to get up to feed the baby (obviously if breastfeeding you need to check if it’s compatible and it probably won’t be).
