16 month old constantly banging toys

My 16 (nearly 17 month old) doesn’t really play with toys as you’d expect. She always bangs something, (sippy cup, toy) against different areas (mostly baby gate and tv cabinet)

she doesn’t do it for long periods of time but that’s how she plays at the minute and isn’t interested in other toys with more of a purpose

any advice please? Thank you

Forgive me if it’s a silly question but do you model playing for her? So like pick up a toy phone and call someone, show her how to play, etc?

Yes and she loves to watch me but doesn’t copy

Does she interact with you otherwise? Shared attention/pointing/first words etc?

When she wants to! She loves to read books together, watches me sing nursery rhymes, runs up for cuddles, knocks my block towers over … she can put cars on a ramp and balls in a toy

no pointing yet, sometimes follows my point, says dada and copies a lions “roar” and babbles

Kids do these things. Get her some toys that make different noises when you bang them and show her how to get different sounds.

in 2 weeks she will move on to something different.

In that case it doesn’t sound outside of the realms of normal tbh. She’s probably just having a banging phase!

SlowSeasons · 17/04/2025 19:13

It's likely just a phase (how long has she been doing it?) maybe get her some toy instruments! Although, by the time you do she'll be on to something else 🤪

atay27 · 17/04/2025 19:19

Thanks everyone! I’m hoping it’s a phase but she’s showing signs of autism. She’s always been a little bit behind in terms of hitting milestones but now it’s becoming noticeable… I’ll get more of an answer after her hearing check

signs I’ve found worrisome
Only responds to her name maybe 20% of the time

gestures only include hands up/ reaching for a cuddle, refuses to clap but can, never has pointed

banging of toys

limited speech mentioned above

she eats really well, sleeps well, is so happy and loving, gives cuddles and knows how to give a kiss…

I know she’s only young but I just find myself symptom spotting every day!

I can't see anything outside the realms of age appropriate development here. Banging stuff is fun because it makes a cool noise.

shardlakem · 17/04/2025 20:19

Everything you said sounds really normal for that age, my LO LOVED banging things at that age, I think he was experimenting with how different objects felt and sounded when hit against different things. Little scientists!

SlowSeasons · 17/04/2025 20:54

On one hand I do think Mum knows best, but on the other hand I know the worries of being a FTM.

Development is so varied before 2+ years old, when they all kind of start to catch up with each other. You'll have more of an idea then. X

Thank you everyone ❤️ you have put my mind at rest (for now) haha. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy days to reply xx

Hi @atay27 do she understand simple commands?like come here/, pass the ball,/give momma kiss etc? Do she understand any words if not commands? Do she do gesture like pointing/waving etc? If yes, then mostly they say its a good sign.

while saying this, i am also going through something similar with my almost 1yr old.She never reapond to name, donot understand command, and have no gestures yet.But her eyecontact is good, she smiles,Eat and sleep nicely.
please post the updates.

This all still sounds normal I think.
