Good snacks for breastfeeding ??

Mamofboys5972 · 10/04/2025 17:42

Basically that. I'm breastfeeding DS2 and I'm starving all the time 😭 it's only week 3 and he's cluster feeding like mad, which means I am too ! Have a toddler as well so struggling to juggle boob time, play time and meal prep time.. So currently whenever I get peckish it's something ultra processed, high in sugar and just crap basically.
Any suggestions for good, semi healthy, really filling snacks to have available at all times ? I think I've eaten 4 loafs of bread this week 🙈

Think I've put this in the wrong topic, couldn't find anything regarding breastfeeding 😕

i crave sweet, so I fill dates with peanut butter and dip in dark chocolate and have about 4/5 that fills me up

BunnyRuddington · 10/04/2025 19:15

I ate Halva when I was BFing DC2. It was in the local shop and seems to be about 3 million calories a tub.

If you have a bit more to spend I can really recommend mothersmealsni on instagram. She delivers throughout the UK and everything she makes is with whole natural ingredients and milk boosting extras such as oats/brewers yeast I think etc. they are really really nice as well as being filling and healthy ish

It’s so great having them delivered to your door! I have two boys and when I had my second and was breastfeeding seemingly all the time they really got me through. Good luck with your move

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 10/04/2025 19:31

I had an oatmeal and raisin cookie habit when my son was born.

I made the ones from the Jane's Patisserie blog with my baby in the carrier, but I'm sure supermarket ones would fill a hole.

EternallyUnsurprised · 10/04/2025 19:37

Nak'd bars helped me. And oat crackers with cheese.

Edit to add, Lidl do knock off nakd bars. Not as good but for anyone going through them like I did it works out much cheaper.

WitcheryDivine · 10/04/2025 19:39

Cheese oatcakes are the shit

Sayshesheshe · 10/04/2025 19:40

Flapjacks!

Mulledjuice · 10/04/2025 19:43

Buckets of porridge with banana and peanut butter and whole milk.

You (or someone helpful) can bake it into a traybake which is then sliced into fingers so you can even eat safely while feeding.

Fruit cake/malt loaf
Hot cross buns

Grassandweeds · 10/04/2025 19:49

My third baby is 10 days old - also have a 3yo and 1yo.

I’ve been eating loads of homemade “flapjack”. I basically make extra porridge when I do breakfast in the morning, then add banana or berries or nuts or nut butter or dates or cinnamon… Whatever combo is to hand really. Spread it on a baking tray about 2cm thick and cook for 15-20 mins. Probably wouldn’t serve it to guests but it’s actually v nice. 😂

Grassandweeds · 10/04/2025 19:50

@Mulledjuice snap!

Jijithecat · 10/04/2025 19:55

Soreen malt loaf. Buy the sliced loaf and apply butter liberally. Bonus is that it's so stodgy you don't leave any crumbs.

ScaryM0nster · 10/04/2025 19:58

Most things made by Nairns.

Either the plain oatcakes (actually healthy).
the flavoured oatcakes (still
pretty good).
Or their biscuits (the healthy end of biscuits. The chocolate chip ones hit a nice balance between biscuit and oat cake).

Come in packets with mini packs inside from most supermarkets so sensible price wise and easy to get.

This sounds amazing 😍 thanks for the tip, currently writing porridge and banana on the shopping list !

Oaty flapjacks with nuts, seeds and dark chocolate slathered on top. This one requires some forethought and someone to make them.

Crackers dipped in houmous or spread with Boursin. Or laden with cheddar.

Crudités and houmous for some vitamins.

The Forest Feast chocolate-covered nuts and fruit.

Tubs of mixed nuts. M&S have some lovely mixes with cashews, almonds etc.

Cereal bars. I can't remember the brand but there are some that are basically nuts and seeds, so quite filling.

Protein bars. The Fulfil brownies ones are nice and filling.

Smoothies (green ones particularly) with added protein powder.

Tub of almond butter and a spoon?!

Lentil chips and guacamole.

Egg cups/muffins with bacon, cheese, spinach and peppers.

Get sourdough bread if you're reaching for sandwiches / toast. And have loads of butter on top!

Tub of almond butter and a spoon 🤣 I would have the best day ever if I just sat with tubs of various butters and a spoon haha

Thank you !!

That’s why I swapped to dark chocolate. When I was pg with DD and then BFing her I literally couldn’t eat enough chocolate. Once I swapped to good quality dark chocolate it sort of scratched that itch and I ate so much less chocolate.

And yes, Halva is amazing. A geeek friend introduced me to it and now I like Halva al oat as much as my friend! Grin

Never thought about switching to dark chocolate! I just said to my wife the cravings I'm having while breastfeeding are worse than when I was actually pregnant. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate 😭

I will have to try some now !

My favourite breastfeeding snacks were shop bought chicken liver pate on good sourdough, grilled cheese on sourdough, and Nairns dark chocolate chip oat biscuits which are great to keep in your beside table.

HelloSunshine346 · 11/04/2025 02:42

There is an infant feeding topic, FYI, just in case you have other questions about breastfeeding. Took me a while to find it too.

I got fat breastfeeding. The hunger was ridiculous and combined with the sleep deprivation meant I couldn't make any good decisions.

I was confused when looking I thought surely there's a topic about it, thank you I'll use that next time 😊

I did with my DS1, gained weight pregnant, gained even more weight breastfeeding, then got pregnant with DS2, gained even more weight, and now I'm feeding again, I'm going to end up huge. Need to try and nip it in the bud
