Hi fellow parents, my oldest daughter is going through some issues with separation anxiety. It’s mostly been over the past week or so. A bit of background, my daughter lost her gran back in November. She was extremely close with her gran, she was upset of course and has night where she cries about how much she misses. Last weekend I had to leave my daughter with a family friend to attend a funeral, my daughter was really upset about staying. My mum picked her and her brother up a few hours later, but the separation anxiety has stemmed from here. My daughter does know we were attending a funeral, so I’m wondering if this has triggered some feelings. She’s been crying every night and every morning since then going to school. At times she’s with me, she’s her normal self but bedtime comes and it’s the same issues over again. I guess I’m just looking for some advice if anyone has experienced anything like this before?

Thank you all for reading

Childhood grief is very complex OP because so often we get it wrong (unintentionally). We try to cheer the child up and distract them rather than acknowledge their pain. We don’t offer them explanations about what happened (so their imaginations fill the gaps). We (shudders) sometimes exclude them from funerals.

There are child counseling services that can help.
