Needing to Vent About ‘Family’

Long story short, it’s my daughter’s first birthday party this weekend. All family said they were coming when we told them a few weeks ago. Two days before, we have been let down by ten people. We have a huge hall, loads of food, soft play hire booked, barely any guests and I’m just feeling deflated 😔 So much effort has gone into this and I guess I just wanted to feel less alone so I’ve come to Mumsnet! I don’t think I’ll ever forget the excuse of ‘oh we’ve decided to go away for the weekend last minute so we won’t make the party’. So hurtful.

Ask some more friends at short notice.
Neighbours, play group friends, work friends.
Make use of the catering.

Maybe you did too much. Sorry.
Huge hall, softplay and loads of food.
Your child won't remember the day. I feel these 1st birthday parties are over celebrated these days and as a guest you easily feels as a part of a set up more than a nice get together, have a cup of tea and a cake.

But of course I wouldn't skip if I had promised to join.

Are you doing a baby class? Could you invite parents and kids to join in and have the day with you?

I hope you get a great day with your LO. Congratulations on 1st year.

Yeah unfortunately I’ve learned that the hard way now. It was more of just wanting to celebrate my baby girls 1st year but also give my 4 year old son and other children in the family something to play on whilst the adults did just have some tea, sandwiches and cake.

The bigger hall was booked because for my little boys first birthday everyone turned up to the house and it was too much.

That’s just life I guess. But I’d also still feel just as let down if I was holding it at my house.

Yes I’ll definitely now extend the invite :)

invite loads of your son’s friends. He’ll have a blast. Enjoy! Your family are bastards. Bollocks to them.

Agree, invite your son’s friends. It’s awful when people let you down at the last minute but you can still have a good time

Thank you for this validation! It’s what I needed to hear 😊
